Distrito de Ratnapura
Ratnapura es un distrito de la Provincia de Sabaragamuwa, en Sri Lanka. Es uno de los 25 distritos de Sri Lanka y constituye el segundo nivel de división administrativa del país. El distrito es administrado por una Secretaría Distrital dirigida por un Secretario Distrital (anteriormente conocido como Government Agent), designado por el gobierno central de Sri Lanka.
Cubre un área de 3.275 km² y, según el censo de 2012, tiene una población de 1.082.277 habitantes. La ciudad se encuentra en la parte suroccidental de Sri Lanka, en la llamada zona húmeda. La localidad recibe precipitaciones principalmente de los monzones del suroeste desde mayo hasta septiembre. Durante los meses restantes del año también se registran lluvias considerables debido a precipitaciones convectivas. La precipitación media anual es de aproximadamente 4.000 a 5.000 mm. La temperatura media varía entre 24 y 35 °C, con altos niveles de humedad. La ciudad se sitúa a 21 m (69 pies) sobre el nivel del mar.
Ratnapura se encuentra a orillas del Kalu Ganga (Río Negro), en la zona centro-sur de Sri Lanka, a unos 101 km (63 millas) al sureste de la capital del país, Colombo. Ratnapura también se escribe como Rathnapura. El nombre «Ratnapura» es una palabra sánscrita que significa «ciudad de las gemas», derivada de las palabras sánscritas pura (ciudad) y ratna (gema). Muchos de los principales comerciantes de gemas de Sri Lanka operan desde esta ciudad. Además de la minería de gemas, la ciudad es conocida por la producción de arroz y frutas. Grandes plantaciones de té y caucho rodean la ciudad. El té cultivado en esta región se conoce como té de tierras bajas. Desde Ratnapura existe una ruta hacia Sri Pada. Las excursiones incluyen la Reserva Forestal de Sinharaja y el Parque Nacional de Udawalawe.
