Distrito de Kurunegala
Kurunegala es un distrito ubicado en la provincia del noroeste de Sri Lanka. Tiene una superficie de 4.812,7 km² (481.270 hectáreas) y consta de 30 Secretarías Divisionales, 1.610 divisiones Grama Niladari y un total de 4.476 aldeas. Además, cuenta con 14 divisiones electorales, 2 consejos municipales, 19 consejos urbanos, 15 ministros parlamentarios, 47 miembros del consejo provincial, 15 ministros y 337 miembros de los consejos locales.
Desde el punto de vista geográfico, el distrito de Kurunegala está limitado por cinco distritos. Al norte limita con el distrito de Anuradhapura, al este con el distrito de Matale, al sur con los distritos de Gampaha y Kegalle, y al oeste con el distrito de Puttalam. La ubicación geográfica del distrito se encuentra entre las latitudes norte 2°28′ – 3°33′ y las longitudes este 104′ – 178′.
Kurunegala posee un trasfondo histórico muy especial en comparación con otros distritos, ya que comprende cuatro antiguos reinos, a saber: Panduwasnuwara, Kurunegala, Yapahuwa y Dambadeniya.
Como porcentaje de la población total de Sri Lanka, el distrito de Kurunegala representa aproximadamente el 7,3 %. Según los datos del censo, la población estimada de Kurunegala en el año 2001 era de alrededor de 1,4 millones de habitantes. La mayoría de los residentes del distrito de Kurunegala pertenecen a la mayoría étnica cingalesa.
