Distrito de Kilinochchi
El distrito de Kilinochchi es uno de los 25 distritos de Sri Lanka y representa el segundo nivel de división administrativa del país. El distrito es administrado por una Secretaría Distrital encabezada por un Secretario Distrital (anteriormente conocido como Agente del Gobierno), designado por el gobierno central de Sri Lanka. La capital del distrito es la ciudad de Kilinochchi.
Entre el siglo V a. C. y el siglo XIII d. C., el actual distrito de Kilinochchi formó parte de Rajarata. Posteriormente, gran parte del distrito de Kilinochchi perteneció al reino precolonial de Jaffna. Más tarde, el distrito pasó a estar bajo el control de los portugueses, los neerlandeses y los británicos. En 1815, los británicos tomaron el control de toda la isla de Ceilán y la dividieron en tres estructuras administrativas basadas en grupos étnicos: cingaleses de las tierras bajas, cingaleses de Kandy y tamiles. El distrito, que entonces formaba parte del distrito de Jaffna, pertenecía a la administración tamil. En 1833, de acuerdo con las recomendaciones de la Comisión Colebrooke-Cameron, estas estructuras administrativas basadas en la etnicidad fueron unificadas en una sola administración, dividida en cinco provincias geográficas. El distrito de Jaffna, junto con el distrito de Mannar y el distrito de Vanni, formaron la nueva Provincia del Norte.
