Distrito de Matara
Matara es una ciudad en la costa sur de Sri Lanka, a 160 km de Colombo. Es una de las mayores ciudades del país. La ciudad conserva muchos vestigios del pasado colonial de Sri Lanka. El tercer río más largo, Nilwala Ganga (Río Azul), separa la ciudad antigua de la nueva.
En los siglos XVI y XVIII, Matara estuvo gobernada por los portugueses y los holandeses. Aún se pueden ver la cultura y la arquitectura de la zona. El famoso faro en Point Dondra fue construido por los holandeses y se considera uno de los más bellos y antiguos de Sri Lanka. Matara es una ciudad comercial bulliciosa y próspera, prácticamente independiente del turismo, lo que ofrece una ventana fascinante a la vida moderna en Sri Lanka. Templo Paravi Dupatha es un templo budista relativamente moderno situado en Isla Pigeon, una pequeña isla frente a la ciudad. Se accede a él por un elegante puente colgante peatonal construido en 2008 (reemplazando el puente anterior arrastrado por el tsunami de 2004). El templo está rodeado de jardines atractivos y alberga numerosas estatuas de Buda y una réplica de la huella de Adam's Peak.
Fuerte de Matara fue construido por los portugueses en 1560 y reconstruido en gran medida por los holandeses en 1640, tras la conquista de Galle. El fuerte, compuesto por una gran muralla de piedra, ocupa el promontorio entre la laguna del río Nilwala y el océano.
La Iglesia Reformada Holandesa en Matara fue construida dentro del Fuerte de Matara por los holandeses en 1706 y remodelada extensamente en 1767 tras la reconstrucción del fuerte en 1762.
Fuerte Estrella se encuentra en el lado occidental del río Nilwala. Fue construido por los holandeses tras la Rebelión de Matara en 1761 para proteger el fuerte principal de ataques desde el río. La construcción del fuerte de forma estrellada única se completó en 1765.
Antiguo Mercado Nupe fue construido en 1784 por los holandeses, a unos 3,2 km del Fuerte de Matara.
Iglesia de Santa María se encuentra en Beach Road. La fecha en la entrada (1769) hace referencia a su reconstrucción tras la Rebelión de Matara de 1762.
