Kurunegala District
Kurunegala is een district in de noordwestelijke provincie van Sri Lanka. Het heeft een oppervlakte van 4.812,7 km² (481.270 hectare) en bestaat uit 30 divisiesekretariaten, 1.610 Grama Niladari-afdelingen en in totaal 4.476 dorpen. Het omvat bovendien 14 kiesdistricten, 2 gemeentelijke raden, 19 stadsraden, 15 parlementaire ministers, 47 leden van de provinciale raad, 15 ministers en 337 leden van lokale raden.
Geografisch gezien wordt het district Kurunegala begrensd door vijf andere districten. In het noorden door het district Anuradhapura, in het oosten door het district Matale, in het zuiden door de districten Gampaha en Kegalle, en in het westen door het district Puttalam. De geografische ligging van het district bevindt zich tussen 2°28′ – 3°33′ noorderbreedte en 104′ – 178′ oosterlengte.
Kurunegala heeft een bijzonder rijke historische achtergrond in vergelijking met andere districten, omdat het vier oude koninkrijken omvat, namelijk Panduwasnuwara, Kurunegala, Yapahuwa en Dambadeniya.
Als percentage van de totale bevolking van Sri Lanka vertegenwoordigt het district Kurunegala ongeveer 7,3%. Volgens de volkstellingsgegevens werd de bevolking van Kurunegala in het jaar 2001 geschat op ongeveer 1,4 miljoen. De meerderheid van de inwoners van het district Kurunegala behoort tot de Singalese etnische meerderheid. Andere etnische minderheden zijn onder meer Sri Lankaanse Moren, Sri Lankaanse Tamils, Burghers en Maleiers. Mensen uit deze etnische minderheden wonen in alle delen van het district.
