Jaffna-district
Het district Jaffna is een van de 25 districten van Sri Lanka, het administratieve niveau van de tweede orde in het land. Het district wordt beheerd door een districtsecretariaat, geleid door een districtsecretaris (voorheen bekend als een regeringsagent) die wordt aangesteld door de centrale regering van Sri Lanka. De hoofdstad van het district is de stad Jaffna.
Tussen de 5e eeuw v.Chr. en de 13e eeuw n.Chr. maakte het huidige district Jaffna deel uit van verschillende koninkrijken, zoals Pandya, Chola, Pallava, Kalinga en Rajarata. Jaffna District was daarna onderdeel van het prekoloniale Jaffna koninkrijk. Het district kwam vervolgens onder Portugese, Nederlandse en Britse controle. In 1815 kregen de Britten de controle over het hele eiland Ceylon. Ze verdeelden het eiland in drie etnisch gebaseerde administratieve structuren: Lage Landen Sinhala, Kandyan Sinhala en Tamil. Het district Jaffna maakte deel uit van de Tamil administratie. In 1833, volgens de aanbevelingen van de Colebrooke-Cameron commissie, werden de etnisch gebaseerde administratieve structuren samengevoegd tot één administratie die werd verdeeld in vijf geografische provincies. Het district Jaffna, samen met Mannar District en Vanni District, vormde de nieuwe Noordelijke Provincie. Toen Ceylon onafhankelijk werd, was Jaffna een van de drie districten in de Noordelijke Provincie. Delen van het district werden overgedragen aan het nieuw opgerichte Mullaitivu District in september 1978. Kilinochchi District werd afgesplitst van het zuidelijke deel van Jaffna District in februari 1984.
Het district Jaffna ligt in het uiterste noorden van Sri Lanka in de Noordelijke Provincie en beslaat het grootste deel van het Jaffna schiereiland. Het heeft een oppervlakte van 1.025 vierkante kilometer (396 vierkante mijl). Het is geografisch verdeeld in vier gebieden:
