Mullaitivu-district
Het district Mullaitivu is een van de 25 districten van Sri Lanka en vormt het tweede niveau van de administratieve indeling van het land. Het district wordt bestuurd door een districtssecretariaat onder leiding van een districtssecretaris (voorheen bekend als regeringsagent), die wordt benoemd door de centrale regering van Sri Lanka. De hoofdstad van het district is de stad Mullaitivu.
Delen van het huidige district Mullaitivu maakten deel uit van het prekoloniale koninkrijk Jaffna. Het district kwam vervolgens onder Portugese, Nederlandse en Britse controle. In 1815 verkregen de Britten de controle over het gehele eiland Ceylon en verdeelden het in drie etnisch gebaseerde administratieve structuren: Laagland-Singalezen, Kandyan-Singalezen en Tamils. Het district, dat toen deel uitmaakte van het district Vanni, viel onder de Tamil-administratie. In 1833 werden, overeenkomstig de aanbevelingen van de Colebrooke-Cameron-commissie, de etnisch gebaseerde administratieve structuren samengevoegd tot één bestuur, verdeeld in vijf geografische provincies. Het district Vanni vormde samen met het district Jaffna en het district Mannar de nieuwe Noordelijke Provincie.
Het district Vanni werd later hernoemd tot het district Mullaitivu en vervolgens tot het district Vavuniya. Het district werd in de tweede helft van de 18e eeuw gekoloniseerd door bewoners van het schiereiland Jaffna, voornamelijk afkomstig uit Alaveddy, Udupiddy en Navaly. Ten tijde van de onafhankelijkheid van Ceylon was Vavuniya een van de drie districten in de Noordelijke Provincie. Het district Mullaitivu werd in september 1978 gevormd uit het noordelijke deel van het district Vavuniya, samen met delen van het toenmalige district Jaffna, het district Mannar en het district Trincomalee.
Tijdens de burgeroorlog stond het district Mullaitivu gedurende vele jaren onder controle van de rebellenorganisatie Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Het district werd begin 2009 heroverd door het Sri Lankaanse leger.
Het district Mullaitivu ligt in het noordoosten van Sri Lanka, binnen de Noordelijke Provincie. Het heeft een oppervlakte van 2.617 vierkante kilometer (1.010 vierkante mijl).
Het district Mullaitivu is verdeeld in zes divisies van het Divisional Secretariat (DS Divisions), elk geleid door een divisiesecretaris (voorheen bekend als assistent-regeringsagent). Deze divisies zijn verder onderverdeeld in 136 Grama Niladhari-divisies (GN Divisions).
