Vavuniya-district
Het Vavuniya-district is een van de 25 districten van Sri Lanka, de administratieve eenheid van het tweede niveau in het land. Het district wordt beheerd door een districtsecretariaat onder leiding van een districtsecretaris (voorheen bekend als een regeringsagent), die is aangesteld door de centrale regering van Sri Lanka. De hoofdstad van het district is de stad Vavuniya.
Tussen de 5e eeuw v.Chr. en de 13e eeuw na Christus maakte het huidige Vavuniya-district deel uit van Rajarata. Het Vavuniya-district werd daarna geregeerd door de Vanniar-leiders die tribuut betaalden aan het prekoloniale Jaffna-koninkrijk. Het district kwam vervolgens onder Portugese, Nederlandse en Britse controle. In 1815 verkregen de Britten de controle over het gehele eiland Ceylon. Ze verdeelden het eiland in drie etnisch gebaseerde administratieve structuren: de lage landen Singalezen, de Kandyan Singalezen en de Tamils. Het district, dat toen Vanni District werd genoemd, maakte deel uit van de Tamilse administratie. In 1833, op basis van de aanbevelingen van de Colebrooke-Cameron-commissie, werden de etnisch gebaseerde administratieve structuren verenigd in één administratie, verdeeld in vijf geografische provincies. Het Vanni-district, samen met het Jaffna-district en het Mannar-district, vormde de nieuwe Noordelijke Provincie.
Het Vanni-district werd later hernoemd naar het Mullaitivu-district en vervolgens naar het Vavuniya-district. Toen Ceylon zijn onafhankelijkheid verwierf, was Vavuniya een van de drie districten die zich in de Noordelijke Provincie bevonden. Het Mullaitivu-district werd in september 1978 afgesplitst van het noordelijke deel van het Vavuniya-district.
De delen van het Vavuniya-district waren gedurende vele jaren tijdens de burgeroorlog onder controle van de opstandige Tamil Eelam Bevrijdingstijgers. Het gehele district werd in 2008 heroverd door het Sri Lankaanse leger.
