District Nuwara Eliya
Het district Nuwara Eliya is een district in de Central Province, Sri Lanka, met de toeristische stad Nuwara Eliya als centrum. De naam betekent "stad op de vlakte (hoogvlakte)" of "stad van licht". De stad is de administratieve hoofdstad van het district Nuwara Eliya, met een pittoresk landschap en een gematigd klimaat. Het ligt op een hoogte van 1.868 m (6.128 voet) en wordt beschouwd als de belangrijkste locatie voor theeproductie in Sri Lanka. De stad wordt overzien door Pidurutalagala, de hoogste berg van Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya staat bekend om zijn gematigde, koele klimaat – het koelste gebied van Sri Lanka.
De stad werd in 1846 gesticht door Samuel Baker, ontdekkingsreiziger van Lake Albert en de bovenloop van de Nijl. Het klimaat van Nuwara Eliya maakte het de belangrijkste toevluchtsoord voor Britse ambtenaren en plantage-eigenaars in Ceylon. Nuwara Eliya, ook wel Little England genoemd, was een bergterrein retraite waar de Britse kolonisten hun vrijetijdsbestedingen zoals vosjacht, hertenjacht, olifantenjacht, polo, golf en cricket konden uitoefenen. Door de hoge ligging heeft Nuwara Eliya een subtropisch hooglandklimaat, zonder uitgesproken droog seizoen, met een monsoonachtig bewolkte periode en een gemiddelde jaartemperatuur van 16 °C (61 °F). In de winter kan het ’s nachts vriezen, maar overdag warmt het snel op door de hoge zonshoek.
De stad komt echt tot leven in april tijdens het Singalese en Tamilt Nieuwjaar. Het feestseizoen begint elk jaar op 1 april ceremonieel. De belangrijkste attracties in april zijn motor- en paardenraces. Motorwedstrijden vinden plaats bij de Mahagastotte- en Radella Hill Climbs, waarvan de eerste sinds 1934 wordt gehouden. De Nuwara Eliya Road Race en de 4X4 Lake Cross aan de rand van Lake Gregory trekken veel enthousiastelingen. Avondfeesten vinden plaats in de hotels, en het seizoen culmineert in de Governor's Cup van negen furlongs (1811 m) op de Nuwara Eliya Racecourse, golftoernooien bij de Nuwara Eliya Golf Club en de bloemenexpositie aan het einde van de maand.
Galway's Land Bird Sanctuary, dicht bij Lake Gregory, is een gebied met bergbos enkele kilometers ten oosten van de stad. Het beslaat een oppervlakte van 0,6 km² en is de thuis van veel vogel- en zoogdiersoorten die endemisch zijn in Sri Lanka, waaronder wilde zwijnen en barking deer. De stad dient als basis voor bezoeken aan . Dit is een belangrijk wildreservaat met open grasland. Soorten die hier voorkomen zijn de luipaard, samburhert en de endemische paarsgezichten langur. Endemische hoogland vogels zijn onder andere de doffe blauwe vliegenvanger, Sri Lanka white-eye en de geel-oor bulbul. De vlakten hebben een veelbezochte toeristische attractie bij World's End, een steile afgrond van 1050 m. De terugweg gaat langs de schilderachtige Baker's Falls. Vroege ochtendbezoeken zijn het beste, zowel om het wild te zien als World's End te bekijken voordat de mist later in de ochtend opkomt.
