Matara-district
Matara is een stad aan de zuidkust van Sri Lanka, op 160 km van Colombo. Het is een van de grootste steden van het land. De stad heeft veel overblijfselen van het koloniale verleden van Sri Lanka. De derde langste rivier, de Nilwala Ganga (Blauwe Rivier), scheidt de oude stad van de nieuwe.
In de 16e en 18e eeuw werd Matara geregeerd door de Portugezen en de Nederlanders. De cultuur en architectuur zijn nog steeds zichtbaar in het gebied. De populaire vuurtoren bij Point Dondra is door de Nederlanders gebouwd en wordt beschouwd als een van de mooiste en oudste vuurtorens van Sri Lanka. Matara is een drukke en bloeiende handelsstad, die nauwelijks afhankelijk is van toerisme, en biedt een fascinerend kijkje in het moderne Sri Lankaanse leven. De belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden zijn de stadsmuren, Nederlandse architectuur, het goed bewaarde Matara Fort en het bruisende straatleven.
Paravi Dupatha-tempel is een relatief moderne boeddhistische tempel op Pigeon Island, een klein eiland voor de stad. De tempel is bereikbaar via een elegante hangbrug voor voetgangers, gebouwd in 2008 (ter vervanging van de eerdere brug die door de tsunami van 2004 werd weggespoeld). De tempel ligt in aantrekkelijke tuinen en herbergt talrijke Boeddhabeelden en een replica van de voetafdruk van Adam’s Peak.
Matara Fort werd in 1560 door de Portugezen gebouwd en in 1640 grotendeels herbouwd door de Nederlanders, na de verovering van Galle. Het fort bestaat uit een grote stenen wal en ligt op het schiereiland tussen de lagune van de Nilwala-rivier en de oceaan.
De Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk in Matara werd in 1706 in het Matara Fort door de Nederlanders gebouwd en in 1767 uitgebreid gerestaureerd na de herbouw van het fort in 1762.
Star Fort ligt aan de westkant van de Nilwala-rivier. Het fort werd na de Matara-opstand van 1761 door de Nederlanders gebouwd om het hoofdfort tegen rivieraanvallen te beschermen. De bouw van het unieke stervormige fort werd in 1765 voltooid.
Oude Nupe-markt werd in 1784 door de Nederlanders gebouwd, ongeveer 3,2 km van Matara Fort.
St. Mary’s Church ligt aan Beach Road. De datum op de poort (1769) verwijst naar de herbouw na de Matara-opstand van 1762.
