Okres Hambantota
Het district Hambantota ligt aan de zuidoostkust van Sri Lanka. Het heeft een oppervlakte van 2.593 km² en Hambantota heeft een tropisch nat en droog klimaat, en er is geen echte droge seizoen, maar er valt aanzienlijk minder regen van januari tot maart en opnieuw van juni tot augustus. De meeste regen valt in oktober en november.
De hoofdstad van het district is de stad Hambantota. Hier bevinden zich de administratieve hoofdkantoren en het centrum van zoutproductie. Andere belangrijke steden zijn Tangalle, Ambalantota, Tissamaharama en Beliatta.
Ongeveer 240 km van Colombo, is Hambantota in het proces van transformatie naar een strategische haven en commercieel centrum, met uitgebreide infrastructuurontwikkeling. Omgeven door uitgestrekte zandstranden is Hambantota een handige locatie om nabijgelegen bezienswaardigheden te bezoeken.
Hambantota ligt op het dichtstbijzijnde punt van de belangrijkste scheepvaartroute Malacca straat / Suez kanaal die Oost en West met elkaar verbindt. De Chinese zon is opgekomen in Hambantota: een massale nieuwe haven gefinancierd door China haven in Hambantota krijgt vorm en zal in november 2010 worden geopend.
Er wordt een nieuwe luchthaven gebouwd die compatibel zal zijn met de nieuwste Airbus A380-vliegtuigen in Hambantota, en er is een internationaal cricketstadion in Hambantota.
De allereerste botanische tuinen van Sri Lanka in de droge zone, die binnenkort de grootste van het eiland zullen zijn, worden momenteel ontwikkeld op een terrein van 300 hectare in Mirijjawila, Hambantota. De tuin heeft als doel de enorme groene zone en biodiversiteit in de omgeving van Hambantota te behouden. Vroeger was Hambantota een dorp in de jungle; volgend jaar zal Hambantota een wonder van moderne ontwikkeling worden van de ene op de andere dag.
Daarnaast heeft het district Hambantota veel toeristische attracties zoals Tissa Lake, Tissamaharama Raja Maha Vihara, Kirinda Vihara Maha Devi Tempel, Yatala Dalada Wehera, Wirawila Tissa Sanctuary, Kirinda Beach, Hummanaya Blow Hole, Goyambokka Beach, Ussangoda National Park, Mulgirigala Raja Maha Viharaya, Kudawella Beach, Yala National Park, Hambanthota Harbor, Martello Tower.
