Colombo-district
Colombo is de commerciële hoofdstad en de grootste stad van Sri Lanka op basis van de bevolking. Volgens de Brookings Institution heeft het metropolitane gebied Colombo een bevolking van 5,6 miljoen, en de stad zelf heeft 752.993 inwoners. Het is het financiële centrum van het eiland en een toeristische bestemming. Het ligt aan de westkust van het eiland en grenst aan het grotere Colombo gebied, dat Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte omvat, de wetgevende hoofdstad van Sri Lanka, en Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia. Colombo wordt vaak de hoofdstad genoemd, omdat Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte zich binnen het stedelijke gebied van Colombo bevindt en een voorstad is van Colombo. Het is ook de administratieve hoofdstad van de Westelijke Provincie en de hoofdstad van het district Colombo.
Door de grote haven en de strategische ligging langs de Oost-West zeehandelsroutes was Colombo al 2000 jaar geleden bekend bij oude handelaren. Het werd de hoofdstad van het eiland toen Sri Lanka in 1815 aan het Britse rijk werd afgestaan, en zijn status als hoofdstad werd behouden toen het land in 1948 onafhankelijk werd. In 1978, toen de administratieve functies naar Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte werden verplaatst, werd Colombo aangewezen als de commerciële hoofdstad van Sri Lanka.
Zoals veel steden, strekt het stedelijke gebied van Colombo zich verder uit dan de grenzen van een enkele lokale autoriteit, en omvat het andere gemeentelijke en stedelijke raden, zoals de Gemeenteraad van Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, de Gemeenteraad van Dehiwala Mount Lavinia, de Stedelijke Raad van Kolonnawa, de Gemeenteraad van Kaduwela en de Pradeshiya Sabha van Kotikawatte Mulleriyawa. De hoofdgemeente herbergt de meeste kantoren van Sri Lankaanse bedrijven, restaurants en entertainmentlocaties.
Beroemde bezienswaardigheden in Colombo zijn onder andere: Galle Face Green, Viharamahadevi Park, de Colombo Racecourse, Beira Lake, Mount Lavinia beach, het planetarium, Dehiwala Zoological Garden, de Universiteit van Colombo, Nelum Pokuna Theater, Colombo Lotus Tower, en het Nationale Museum.
