Puttalam District
Puttalam is een district dat is gelegen nabij de westkust van Sri Lanka. Het heeft een oppervlakte van 3.072 km² (1.186 vierkante mijl). Samen met het district Kurunegala vormt het de Noordwestelijke Provincie van Sri Lanka. De districtshoofdstad is Puttalam, dat in het noorden grenst aan de Kala Oya en de Modaragam Aru, in het oosten aan het district Anuradhapura en het district Kurunegala, in het zuiden aan de Ma Oya en in het westen aan de Indische Oceaan. Puttalam staat bekend om zijn schilderachtige lagunes, die populair zijn voor ondiep zeevissen en garnalenteelt. De stad Kalpitiya en het Kalpitiya-schiereiland bevinden zich eveneens in dit district.
Het district Puttalam is een multireligieus gebied. Het boeddhisme is de belangrijkste religie in het district en is hier gevestigd sinds de vroege periode van het koninkrijk Anuradhapura. De op één na meest voorkomende religie is het rooms-katholicisme. Naast deze twee hoofdreligies zijn ook het hindoeïsme, het christendom en de islam goed vertegenwoordigd in de regio. De Munneswaram-hindoetempel en de Sint-Annakerk van Thalawila behoren tot de historische religieuze bezienswaardigheden in het gebied.
