Ampara-district
Ampara District is een van de 25 districten van Sri Lanka, de administratieve eenheden van het tweede niveau van het land. Het district wordt beheerd door een districtsecretariaat, geleid door een districtsecretaris (voorheen bekend als een regeringsagent), aangesteld door de centrale regering van Sri Lanka. De hoofdstad van het district is de stad Ampara. Het district werd afgescheiden van het zuidelijke deel van het Batticaloa district in april 1961.
Het Ampara District ligt in het zuidoosten van Sri Lanka in de Oostelijke Provincie. Het heeft een oppervlakte van 4.415 vierkante kilometer (1.705 vierkante mijl). Het wordt begrensd door de districten Batticaloa en Polonnaruwa in het noorden, de Indische Oceaan in het oosten, het Hambantota District in het zuiden, de districten Badulla en Matale in het noordwesten, en het Monaragala District in het westen en zuidoosten.
Het noordwestelijke uiteinde van het Ampara District (Dehiyattakandiya D.S. divisie) is gescheiden van de rest van het district en de Oostelijke Provincie door het Maduru Oya reservoir.
Het aantal inwoners van het Ampara District was 648.057 in 2012. Het district is een van de meest diverse van Sri Lanka, zowel etnisch als religieus.
De bevolking van het district, net als de rest van het oosten en noorden, werd beïnvloed door de burgeroorlog. De oorlog kostte naar schatting 100.000 mensen het leven. Honderdduizenden Sinhalese verhuisden naar het westen van het land. Veel Sri Lankaanse Tamils verhuisden ook naar de relatief veilige hoofdstad Colombo. De oorlog zorgde er ook voor dat veel mensen uit alle etnische en religieuze groepen die in het district woonden, naar andere delen van Sri Lanka vluchtten, hoewel de meeste van hen sinds het einde van de burgeroorlog zijn teruggekeerd naar het district.
