Ratnapura District
Ratnapura is een district in de provincie Sabaragamuwa, in Sri Lanka. Het is een van de 25 districten van Sri Lanka en vormt het tweede niveau van de administratieve indeling van het land. Het district wordt bestuurd door een districtssecretariaat onder leiding van een districtssecretaris (voorheen bekend als Government Agent), die wordt benoemd door de centrale regering van Sri Lanka.
Het district beslaat een oppervlakte van 3.275 km² en had volgens de volkstelling van 2012 een bevolking van 1.082.277 inwoners. De stad ligt in het zuidwestelijke deel van Sri Lanka, in de zogenoemde natte zone. De neerslag wordt voornamelijk veroorzaakt door de zuidwestmoesson van mei tot september. Tijdens de overige maanden van het jaar valt er eveneens aanzienlijke neerslag als gevolg van convectieve regen. De gemiddelde jaarlijkse neerslag bedraagt ongeveer 4.000 tot 5.000 mm. De gemiddelde temperatuur varieert tussen 24 en 35 °C en de luchtvochtigheid is hoog. De stad ligt 21 m (69 voet) boven zeeniveau.
Ratnapura ligt aan de Kalu Ganga (Zwarte Rivier) in het zuid-centrale deel van Sri Lanka, op ongeveer 101 km (63 mijl) ten zuidoosten van de hoofdstad van het land, Colombo. Ratnapura wordt ook gespeld als Rathnapura. De naam ‘Ratnapura’ is een Sanskrietwoord dat „stad van edelstenen” betekent, afgeleid van de woorden pura (stad) en ratna (edelsteen). Veel vooraanstaande edelstenenhandelaren in Sri Lanka zijn in deze stad gevestigd. Naast de winning van edelstenen staat de stad ook bekend om de productie van rijst en fruit. Grote plantages met thee en rubber omringen de stad. De thee die in deze regio wordt verbouwd, staat bekend als laaglandthee. Vanuit Ratnapura loopt ook een route naar Sri Pada. Tot de excursies behoren het Sinharaja-bosreservaat en het Nationaal Park Udawalawe. De omliggende regio is een populaire bestemming voor trektochten en een uitstekende plek voor vogels spotten.
