Mannar-district
Het district Sri Lanka ligt in het noordwesten van de Noordelijke Provincie. Het heeft een oppervlakte van 1.996 vierkante kilometer. Mannar is de belangrijkste stad van het district Mannar en wordt bestuurd door een stadsraad. De stad ligt op het eiland Mannar met uitzicht op de Gulf of Mannar en herbergt de historische Ketheeswaram-tempel. Vroeger stond de stad bekend als een centrum voor parelvisserij, genoemd in de 2e eeuw na Christus in de Periplus van de Erythreïsche Zee. Mannar staat bekend om zijn baobabbomen en het Mannar Fort, gebouwd door de Portugezen in 1560 en ingenomen door de Nederlanders in 1658, waarna het werd herbouwd; de wallen en bastions zijn intact, hoewel het interieur grotendeels is verwoest. Visueel wordt de moderne stad gedomineerd door kerken, hindoeïstische tempels en moskeeën. De Katholieke Kerk heeft er een bisdom gevestigd. Per spoor is de stad verbonden met de rest van Sri Lanka via de Mannar-lijn. Tijdens de Sri Lankaanse burgeroorlog tussen 1983 en 2009 werd de stad bezet door de LTTE.
Het district Mannar is uniek vanwege zijn vegetatie en wilde dieren, in tegenstelling tot de rest van Sri Lanka. Mannar-eiland is een van de weinige plaatsen in Sri Lanka waar baobabbomen goed gedijen. Apen houden van de vruchten, daarom wordt de boom soms het "apenbroodboom" genoemd.
De dugong is een middelgroot zeewierzoogdier dat voorkomt in de baai van Mannar, Nachchikuda, Jaffna-eiland en nabij Adam's Bridge. De IUCN-conserveringsstatus is kwetsbaar vanwege overbejaging voor voedsel en accidentele vangst in visnetten.
Een kritiek bedreigde vogelspinsoort, Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica, werd voor het eerst in Sri Lanka aangetroffen in de regio Mannar. Dit was de eerste keer dat de spin buiten India werd geregistreerd. Het Vankalai-reservaat voor vogels, internationaal erkend als een belangrijk gebied voor watervogels onder het Ramsar-verdrag, ligt op het vasteland net ten zuiden van Mannar-eiland.
