منطقة نوارا إليا
مقاطعة نوارا إيليا هي مقاطعة في المحافظة الوسطى، سريلانكا، مركزها مدينة نوارا إيليا السياحية. يعني اسمها "المدينة على الهضبة (المرتفعة)" أو "مدينة الضوء". المدينة هي العاصمة الإدارية لمقاطعة نوارا إيليا، وتتميز بمناظر طبيعية خلابة ومناخ معتدل. تقع على ارتفاع 1,868 م (6,128 قدم) وتعتبر أهم موقع لإنتاج الشاي في سريلانكا. تطل المدينة على قمة بيدوروتالاغالا، أعلى جبل في سريلانكا. نوارا إيليا مشهورة بمناخها المعتدل والبارد المناخي – أبرد منطقة في سريلانكا.
تأسست المدينة على يد صموئيل بيكر، المستكشف لبحيرة ألبرت والنيل الأعلى، في عام 1846. مناخ نوارا إيليا جعلها الملاذ الرئيسي للموظفين البريطانيين والمزارعين في سيلان. تُعرف نوارا إيليا باسم "إنجلترا الصغيرة"، وكانت منتجعًا جبليًا يمكن للمستعمرين البريطانيين ممارسة أنشطتهم المفضلة مثل صيد الثعالب، وصيد الغزلان، وصيد الفيلة، ورياضة البولو، والغولف والكريكيت. بسبب موقعها المرتفع، تتمتع نوارا إيليا بمناخ شبه استوائي مرتفع، بدون موسم جاف واضح، مع موسم غائم شبيه بالرياح الموسمية ومتوسط درجة حرارة سنوي 16 °C (61 °F). في أشهر الشتاء، قد يحدث صقيع ليلاً، لكنه يسخن بسرعة خلال النهار بسبب زاوية الشمس العالية.
بحيرة غريغوري يجذب العديد من المتحمسين. تُقام الحفلات الليلية في الفنادق، وتختتم الموسم بكأس المحافظ لمسافة تسعة فُرلونج (1811 م) في مضمار سباق نوارا إيليا، وبطولات الغولف في نادي الغولف بنوارا إيليا، وعرض الزهور في نهاية الشهر.
محمية جالواي لاند للطيور، بالقرب من بحيرة غريغوري، هي منطقة غابات جبلية على بعد بضعة كيلومترات شرق المدينة. تغطي مساحة 0.6 كم² وتعتبر موطنًا للعديد من أنواع الطيور والثدييات المستوطنة في سريلانكا، بما في ذلك الخنزير البري والغزال المنبّه. المدينة هي قاعدة للزيارات إلى . هذه المنطقة الرئيسية للحياة البرية تشمل الغابات العشبية المفتوحة. الأنواع الموجودة هنا تشمل النمر، غزال السامبور، والـ لانغور ذو الوجه البنفسجي المستوطن. الطيور المرتفعة تشمل الذبابة الزرقاء الباهتة، عين سريلانكا البيضاء، والبلبل ذو الأذن الصفراء. تحتوي السهول على معلم سياحي مشهور هو نهاية العالم، وهو جرف شديد الانحدار بارتفاع 1050 م. تمر العودة عبر شلالات بيكر. الزيارات الصباحية المبكرة هي الأفضل لمشاهدة الحياة البرية والاستمتاع برؤية نهاية العالم قبل أن يغطيها الضباب في وقت لاحق من الصباح.
