Hambantota District
Hambantota District is located on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka. It has an area of 2,593 km² and Hambantota features a tropical wet and dry climate and there is no true dry season, but there is significantly less rain from January–March and again from June–August. The heaviest rain falls in October and November.
The district capital is Hambantota town. The administrative headquarters are there as well as the center of salt production. Other prominent towns include Tangalle, Ambalantota, Tissamaharama and Beliatta.
Approximately 240 kms from Colombo, Hambantota is in the midst of transformation into a strategic port and commercial center, undergoing extensive infrastructure development. Flanked by sweeping sandy beaches, Hambantota is a convenient location from which to visit nearby sights.
Hambantota is situated at closest point to the main shipping route Malacca street / Suez Canal that connects East and West. Chinese sun has dawned in Hambantota: a Chinese funded massive new seaport harbor at Hambantota is taking shape to open in November 2010.
A new airport to be compatible with the latest Airbus A380 aircraft is under construction at Hambantota, there is an international cricket stadium at Hambantota.
Sri Lanka's first-ever botanical gardens in the dry zone, soon to be the largest in the island, is now being developed at a 300-acre site at Mirijjawila, Hambantota. The Garden is aimed at conserving the massive green patch and bio diversity in the area around Hambantota. Yesteryear Hambantota was a village in the jungle; in the coming year, Hambantota is bound become a miracle of modern development overnight.
