منطقة كولومبو
جالي هي إحدى المناطق في المقاطعة الجنوبية في سريلانكا. وهي واحدة من 25 منطقة في سريلانكا، وهي التقسيم الإداري من المستوى الثاني للبلاد. يتم إدارة المنطقة من قبل أمانة المنطقة التي يرأسها أمين المنطقة (الذي كان يُعرف سابقًا بالوكيل الحكومي) والذي يعينه الحكومة المركزية في سريلانكا.
مساحتها 1,652 كيلومتر مربع (638 ميل مربع): 35 كيلومتر مربع (14 ميل مربع) مغطاة بالمياه و1,617 كيلومتر مربع (624 ميل مربع) هي أراضٍ. جالي تحدها من الشمال نهر بينثارا، ومن الجنوب والغرب المحيط الهندي ومن الشرق ماتارا وراتنابورا. تضاريس منطقة جالي متنوعة للغاية. الحالة المناخية في منطقة هينيدوما باتوا مشابهة للغاية لتلك الموجودة في التلال المركزية في سريلانكا. هذه المنطقة تتكون من غابات مطيرة وهي منطقة تجمع المياه لمعظم الأنهار والبحيرات التي تمر عبر منطقة جالي. غابة سينهاراجا المحمية هي واحدة من هذه المناطق. منطقة جالي تقع في منطقة مناخية معتدلة.
المعدل السنوي لهطول الأمطار يتراوح بين 2000-2500 ملم. يبدأ نهر غين "غين غانغا" من تلة غونغالا في منطقة هينيدوما باتوا ويمر في رحلته الطويلة التي تصل إلى 113 كيلومترًا (70 ميلًا). يمر عبر نلوة، ثوالاما، ناغودا بادديغاما، وثيليكادا. يغذي النهر الأرض على امتداد 922 كيلومتر مربع (356 ميل مربع). يصب في المحيط الهندي في منطقة غينثوتا في جالي. نهر مادو غانغا يبدأ من بولاثو كاندا ويجري إلى البحر من بالابيتيا ويساعد في الحفاظ على التوازن البيئي في منطقة جالي.
في سريلانكا القديمة، كانت منطقة جالي تحتل مكانة هامة في المعارك ضد الأعداء باعتبارها عاصمة المقاطعة الجنوبية. تكشف الأساطير القديمة أن الملك فيجاياباهو الأول بدأ معركته ضد "سولي" في تامبالاجامووا في هينيدوما باتوا في عام 1072 ميلادي. وفقًا للأساطير، خلال فترة حكم الملك دامبهادينيا، خاض باراكيرامابهوا معركته ضد الملكة سوغالا في منطقة جالي. كانت منطقة جالي مهمة جدًا خلال حكم الملك ماها باراكيرامابهوا وساعدت بشكل كبير البرتغاليين والهولنديين والإنجليز في تأسيس ممالكهم.
كانت جالي تُسمى "غيمهاتيثا". والنطق السنهالي "غالا" مشتق من كلمة "غالا" (حجر). تشير كلمة "غالا" إلى مكان التقاء العربات التي تجرها الثيران. في وقت لاحق، تم نطقها كـ "غالا" بسبب وجود الصخور الكبيرة والتلال في المنطقة.
لقد قدم العديد من الأفراد من منطقة جالي مساهمات كبيرة في الأدب السنهالي. أنتج معهد توتاجامووا فيجايابا بيريفينا، الذي كان من أشهر المعاهد التعليمية في فترة كوتة، العديد من العلماء البارزين. من بين المقيمين البارزين في جالي: هيكادووي سري سو مانغالا ثيرا، ميغيتتواتي غوناناندا ثيرا، مارتن ويكراماسينغه، نانداداسا كوداغودا، إدوين أرياداسا، إم. بي. أريابالا، غوناداسا أماراسيكيرا، د. ج. ويمالاسورنندرا، سينارات باراناويثانا، أ. ت. أرياراتني وأريابالا غورونانسي.
مهرجان جالي الأدبي يجذب حوالي 3,000 شخص إلى جالي كل عام في يناير، ويجذب الكتاب من جميع أنحاء جنوب آسيا.
