مقاطعة مانار
يقع إقليم مانار في الشمال الغربي من سريلانكا ضمن المقاطعة الشمالية. وتبلغ مساحته 1,996 كيلومترًا مربعًا (771 ميلًا مربعًا). وتُعد مدينة مانار المدينة الرئيسية في إقليم مانار، وهي تخضع لإدارة مجلس حضري. وتقع المدينة على جزيرة مانار مطلة على خليج مانار، وتضم معبد كيتيسوارام التاريخي. وكانت المدينة في السابق مشهورة كمركز لصيد اللؤلؤ، وقد ذُكرت في كتاب "دليل البحر الإريتري" الذي يعود إلى القرن الثاني الميلادي. وتشتهر مانار بأشجار الباوباب وبـقلعتها التي بناها البرتغاليون عام 1560، ثم استولى عليها الهولنديون عام 1658 وأعادوا بناءها؛ ولا تزال أسوارها وحصونها قائمة رغم أن داخلها دُمّر إلى حد كبير. ومن الناحية البصرية، تهيمن على المدينة الحديثة كنائسها ومعابدها الهندوسية ومساجدها. كما أن للكنيسة الكاثوليكية أبرشية يقع مقرها في المدينة. وترتبط المدينة ببقية أنحاء سريلانكا عبر السكك الحديدية بواسطة خط مانار. وقد كانت المدينة تحت سيطرة نمور التاميل (LTTE) خلال الحرب الأهلية السريلانكية بين عامي 1983 و2009.
يتميّز إقليم مانار بغطائه النباتي وحياته البرية بشكل فريد مقارنة ببقية أنحاء سريلانكا. وتُعد جزيرة مانار من الأماكن القليلة في البلاد التي تنمو فيها أشجار الباوباب. وتحب القرود ثمار هذه الشجرة، ولذلك تُعرف أحيانًا باسم شجرة خبز القرود.
الأطوم هو ثديي بحري متوسط الحجم يوجد في خليج مانار، وناشيكودا، وجزيرة جافنا، وبالقرب من جسر آدم (رام سيتو). وتصنيفه في القائمة الحمراء للاتحاد الدولي لحفظ الطبيعة (IUCN) هو مهدد بالانقراض، وذلك بسبب الصيد الجائر من أجل الغذاء والوقوع العرضي في شباك الصيد.
تم اكتشاف نوع من العناكب الرتيليات المهددة بالانقراض الشديد يُعرف باسم Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica لأول مرة في سريلانكا في منطقة مانار. وكانت هذه هي المرة الأولى التي يُسجل فيها هذا النوع خارج الهند. كما تقع محمية فانكلاي للطيور، المعترف بها دوليًا كمنطقة مهمة للطيور المائية بموجب اتفاقية رامسار، في البر الرئيسي جنوب جزيرة مانار مباشرة.
