Noordelijke provincie
De Noordelijke Provincie ligt in het noorden van Sri Lanka, op slechts 35 km van India. Zij heeft een landoppervlakte van 8.884 km². De provincie wordt in het westen begrensd door de Golf van Mannar en de Palkbaai, in het noordwesten door de Palkstraat, in het noorden en oosten door de Golf van Bengalen en in het zuiden door de provincies Oostelijk, Noord-Centraal en Noordwestelijk. De Noordelijke Provincie van Sri Lanka bestaat uit vijf administratieve districten: Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mulaitivu, Vavuniya en Mannar, waarbij Jaffna de provinciale hoofdstad is en het administratieve hoofdkwartier van het district Jaffna, gelegen op een gelijknamig schiereiland.
Jaffna ligt op ongeveer zes mijl van Kandarodai, dat sinds de klassieke oudheid dienstdeed als een beroemd handelscentrum op het schiereiland Jaffna. De voorstad van Jaffna, Nallur, fungeerde als hoofdstad van het vier eeuwen durende middeleeuwse koninkrijk Jaffna. Vóór de Sri Lankaanse burgeroorlog was het de op één na dichtstbevolkte stad van Sri Lanka, na Colombo. Door de Tamil-opstand raakte de stad echter geleidelijk ontvolkt. Sinds het einde van de burgeroorlog in 2009 keren vluchtelingen en intern ontheemden terug naar hun huizen en is de wederopbouw door de overheid en de particuliere sector begonnen.
Historisch gezien is Jaffna een betwiste stad geweest. Tijdens de Portugese bezetting van het schiereiland Jaffna in 1619 werd zij ontwikkeld tot een koloniale havenstad. In 1796 wisselde de stad van machthebber nadat de Nederlanders door de Britten waren verslagen. Nadat Sri Lanka in 1948 onafhankelijk werd, verslechterde de politieke relatie tussen de minderheid van de Sri Lankaanse Tamils en de meerderheid van de Singalezen. Na de koelbloedige moord op 13 soldaten van het Sri Lankaanse leger braken rellen uit. Jaffna werd in 1986 door terroristen bezet en in 1995 herwon het Sri Lankaanse leger de controle.
Noordelijke Provincie
De meerderheid van de stadsbevolking bestaat uit Sri Lankaanse Tamils, hoewel er in het verleden ook een aanzienlijk aantal Sri Lankaanse Moren, Indiase Tamils en Singalezen in de stad aanwezig was. De meeste Sri Lankaanse Tamils zijn hindoes, gevolgd door christenen, moslims en een boeddhistische minderheid. De stad herbergt een aantal onderwijsinstellingen die tijdens de koloniale en postkoloniale periode zijn opgericht. Daarnaast zijn er diverse commerciële instellingen, kleine industriële eenheden, banken, hotels en andere overheidsinstellingen zoals het ziekenhuis. Zij is ook de thuisbasis van de bekende bibliotheek van Jaffna, die werd afgebrand en later herbouwd. De stad wordt gekenmerkt door het fort van Jaffna, dat tijdens de Nederlandse koloniale periode werd herbouwd.
Opgravingen die Sir Paul E. Pieris in 1918 en 1919 uitvoerde in de oude hoofdstad van Jaffna, Kandarodai, en in Vallipuram, een kustplaats zes kilometer van Point Pedro, brachten munten aan het licht die “puranas” worden genoemd, evenals “kohl”-stokjes die dateren uit 2000 v.Chr. en qua stijl vergelijkbaar zijn met de stokjes die in Egypte werden gebruikt om afbeeldingen te schilderen. Dit suggereert dat het noordelijke deel van Sri Lanka een “bloeiende” nederzetting was vóór de komst van prins Vijaya. In de kroniek Mahavamsa, rond de zesde eeuw v.Chr., worden exotische stammen beschreven, zoals de Yakkha’s die strikt het centrum van het eiland bewoonden, en de Naga’s die slangen vereerden en de noordelijke, westelijke en oostelijke delen van het eiland bewoonden, dat historisch bekendstond als “Nagadipa”. De stad Jaffna maakte, samen met de rest van het schiereiland Jaffna, in 543 v.Chr. deel uit van het koninkrijk Tambapanni. Southern ProvinceThe Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of three districts: Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Farming and fishing are the main sources of income for the vast majority of the people in this region.

Uva ProvinceThe Uva Province consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala while the capital of the province is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

North Western ProvinceNorth Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

Northern ProvinceThe Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.
