Südliche Provinz

Die Südprovinz von Sri Lanka ist ein kleines geografisches Gebiet, das aus drei Bezirken besteht: Galle, Matara und Hambantota. Landwirtschaft und Fischerei sind die Haupteinnahmequellen für die überwiegende Mehrheit der Menschen in dieser Region. Wichtige Sehenswürdigkeiten der Südprovinz sind die Wildtierschutzgebiete: Yala, Lunugamvehera und Bundala Nationalparks. Ussangoda in Ambalantota, das prähistorische Verbindungen hat, bietet einen Panoramablick auf den Strand und das Meer sowie auf die antiken Städte Tissamaharama, Kirinda und Galle. Während der portugiesischen Zeit gab es zwei berühmte Singhalesische Dichter, Andare aus Dickwella und Gajaman Nona aus Denipitiya im Matara-Distrikt, die Gedichte über den einfachen Menschen verfassten.

Der Bezirk Galle grenzt im Norden an den Bentara-Fluss, im Süden und Westen an den Indischen Ozean und im Osten an die Bezirke Matara und Ratnapura. Die Topografie des Galle-Bezirks ist sehr abwechslungsreich. Das Klima von Hiniduma Pattuwa ähnelt stark dem zentralen Hügelland von Sri Lanka. Dieses Gebiet besteht aus Regenwäldern, die als Einzugsgebiete für die meisten Flüsse und Seen im Bezirk Galle dienen. Das Sinharaja Forest Reserve ist eines davon. Der Bezirk Galle liegt in einer gemäßigten Klimazone, und der jährliche Niederschlag beträgt zwischen 2000 und 2500 mm. Der Fluss „Gin Ganga“ entspringt am Gongala-Hügel von Hiniduma Pattuwa und durchquert auf seiner 113 km (70 mi) langen Reise die Gebiete Neluwa, Thawalama, Nagoda, Baddegama und Thelikada. Der Fluss bewässert ein Landgebiet von 922 km². Nach seiner langen Reise mündet er bei Gintota in den Indischen Ozean. Der Madhu Ganga (Fluss) entspringt in Polathukanda und mündet bei Balapitiya ins Meer. Er trägt zur ökologischen Balance im Bezirk Galle bei.

Galle Fort und das Sinharaja Forest Reserve sind von der UNESCO zu Welterbestätten erklärt worden. Die Kanneliya- und Hiyare-Waldreservate befinden sich im Bezirk Galle.

Der Bezirk Matara ist von einem landschaftlich reizvollen Küstenstreifen umgeben und voller natürlicher Schönheit. Er besitzt eine stolze Geschichte und ist eine fruchtbare Region zwischen den Bezirken Galle und Hambantota. Er umfasst den Sinharaja-Regenwald und viele attraktive Wasserfälle. Klimatisch gehört der Bezirk Matara zur feuchten Zone des Tieflandes. Dieses Klimamuster entspricht weitgehend den allgemeinen Bedingungen der Insel.

Der Bezirk Hambantota liegt an der südöstlichen Küste von Sri Lanka. Die Hauptstadt des Bezirks ist Hambantota, ein Zentrum der Salzproduktion. Weitere bedeutende Städte sind Tangalle, Ambalantota, Tissamaharama und Beliatta.

Bevor nach der Unabhängigkeit des Landes im Jahr 1948 die moderne Entwicklung begann, war die Landwirtschaft im Bezirk Chena-Anbau und in gewissem Maße Reisanbau auf nicht-bewässertem Land. In den Hochlagen wurde Kurakkan zusammen mit anderen Getreidesorten wie Mais angebaut. Leonard Woolfs „Village in the Jungle“ bietet einen sehr interessanten und aufschlussreichen Einblick in die Region.

  • The Central Province is located in the central hills of Sri Lanka comprising of three administrative districts: Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya. The land area of the province is 5,575 km2 which is 8.6% of the total land area of Sri Lanka.

  • The Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of three districts: Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Farming and fishing are the main sources of income for the vast majority of the people in this region.

  • The Uva Province consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala while the capital of the province is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

  • Sabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

  • North Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

  • The largest province of Sri Lanka, located in the dry zone being 10,714 km2 in extent, the North Central Province that consists of two administrative districts viz. Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa,

  • The Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.

  • Another province of Sri Lanka mostly known for its golden beaches and the natural harbour, the Eastern Province which is 9,996 km2 in extent consists of three administrative districts namely Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara.
