Westprovinz
Die am dichtesten besiedelte Provinz von Sri Lanka, die Westprovinz, die eine Fläche von 3.593 km² umfasst, ist die Heimat der legislativen Hauptstadt Sri Jayewardenepura. Sie ist auch das wirtschaftliche Zentrum des Landes, Colombo.
Fast alle führenden Bildungseinrichtungen der Insel befinden sich in der Westprovinz. Zu den Universitäten der Provinz gehören die University of Colombo, die University of Sri Jayewardenepura, die University of Kelaniya, die Open University of Sri Lanka, die Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, die University of Moratuwa und das Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology. Die Westprovinz hat auch die größte Anzahl an Schulen im Land.
Die Westprovinz besteht aus drei Bezirken: Colombo, Gampaha und Kalutara.
Der Bezirk Colombo hat eine Fläche von 642 km², und die Hauptstadt ist Colombo. Weitere bekannte und wichtige Städte im Bezirk sind Dehiwala, Nugegoda, Maharagama, Homagama, Avissawella und Moratuwa. Der Kotte Urban Development Council, der in den 1930er Jahren mit einem modernen Gebäude in Rajagiriya gegründet wurde, wurde vom Kotte Urban Council abgelöst, wobei ein großer Teil entfernt und dem Colombo Municipal Council, Stadtteil Borella, zugeordnet wurde, während der Battaramulla Urban Council aufgelöst wurde und ein kleiner Teil von Battaramulla dem Kotte Urban Council zugeordnet wurde. Der Kotte Urban Council wurde 1997 zum Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte Municipal Council.
Mount Lavinia ist eine neu gegründete Stadt, die unmittelbar südlich von Colombo liegt. Sie entstand durch die Zusammenlegung bestimmter wichtiger Vororte und Gemeinden zu Verwaltungszwecken. Zu den Zentren gehören Dehiwala und das Strandresort Mount Lavinia. Hier befindet sich auch der National Zoological Garden von Sri Lanka, einer der größten in Asien. Dehiwala und Mount Lavinia liegen direkt südlich von Wellawatte entlang der Galle Road, die entlang der Küste im Süden des Landes verläuft. Es ist eine der liberalsten Regionen in Sri Lanka und Austragungsort des jährlichen Rainbow Kite Festivals der Insel.
Der Bezirk Gampaha hat eine Fläche von 1.386,6 km², und die Hauptstadt ist Gampaha. Weitere bekannte und wichtige Städte sind Nittambuwa, Wattala, Ja-ela, Negombo und Veyangoda.
Gampaha ist eine städtische Stadt nördlich von Colombo und durch den Kelani-Fluss von Colombo getrennt. Der Name „Gampaha“ bedeutet auf Singhalesisch „Fünf Dörfer“. Die Stadt liegt im Zentrum des Bezirks Gampaha und etwa 4 km von Miriswatta an der Colombo-Kandy Road entfernt. Sie wird von den Städten Yakkala, Miriswatta, Weliweriya, Udugampola und Ja-Ela umgeben.
In den letzten Jahren hat Gampaha eine rasante Entwicklung durchlaufen, viele neue Einkaufszentren, Straßen, Brücken und Überführungen wurden gebaut. Private Institutionen standen hinter den meisten Entwicklungsprogrammen in diesem Gebiet.
Ein weiterer Bezirk der Westprovinz ist Kalutara, der eine Fläche von 1.606 km² hat, und die Hauptstadt ist Kalutara. Weitere wichtige und bekannte Städte in diesem Bezirk sind Panadura, Beruwala, Aluthgama, Horana und Matugama.
Kalutara ist eine Ferienstadt, die etwa 40 km südlich von Colombo liegt.

Central ProvinceThe Central Province is located in the central hills of Sri Lanka comprising of three administrative districts: Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya. The land area of the province is 5,575 km2 which is 8.6% of the total land area of Sri Lanka.

Southern ProvinceThe Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of three districts: Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Farming and fishing are the main sources of income for the vast majority of the people in this region.

Uva ProvinceThe Uva Province consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala while the capital of the province is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

North Western ProvinceNorth Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

Northern ProvinceThe Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.

Eastern ProvinceAnother province of Sri Lanka mostly known for its golden beaches and the natural harbour, the Eastern Province which is 9,996 km2 in extent consists of three administrative districts namely Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara.
