مقاطعة أمبارا
منطقة أمبارا هي واحدة من 25 منطقة في سريلانكا، وهي من أقسام الإدارة الثانية في البلاد. يتم إدارة المنطقة بواسطة الأمانة العامة التي يرأسها أمين المنطقة (الذي كان يعرف سابقًا بالوكيل الحكومي) والذي يتم تعيينه من قبل الحكومة المركزية في سريلانكا. عاصمة المنطقة هي مدينة أمبارا. تم تقسيم المنطقة من الجزء الجنوبي من منطقة باتيكالوا في أبريل 1961.
تقع منطقة أمبارا في جنوب شرق سريلانكا في المقاطعة الشرقية. تبلغ مساحتها 4415 كيلومترًا مربعًا (1705 ميل مربع). تحدها مناطق باتيكالوا و بولوناروا من الشمال، والمحيط الهندي من الشرق، ومنطقة هامبانتوتا من الجنوب، ومنطقة بادولا و ماتالي من الشمال الغربي، ومنطقة موناراغالا من الغرب والجنوب الشرقي.
الجزء الشمالي الغربي من منطقة أمبارا (منطقة دهيياتكانديا) مفصول عن بقية المنطقة والمقاطعة الشرقية بواسطة خزان خزان مادورو أويا.
كان عدد سكان منطقة أمبارا 648,057 في عام 2012. المنطقة هي واحدة من أكثر المناطق تنوعًا في سريلانكا، سواء من الناحية العرقية أو الدينية.
تأثرت منطقة أمبارا، مثل بقية شرق وشمال سريلانكا، بالحرب الأهلية. أسفرت الحرب عن مقتل حوالي 100,000 شخص. انتقل عدة مئات الآلاف من السنهاليين إلى الجانب الغربي من البلاد. كما انتقل العديد من التاميل السريلانكيين إلى العاصمة كولومبو بحثًا عن الأمان النسبي. كما تسببت الحرب في نزوح العديد من الأشخاص من جميع المجموعات العرقية والدينية الذين عاشوا في المنطقة إلى أجزاء أخرى من سريلانكا، على الرغم من أن معظمهم قد عادوا إلى المنطقة منذ نهاية الحرب الأهلية.
