Distrito de Mannar
O distrito de Sri Lanka está localizado no noroeste da Província do Norte. Possui uma área de 1.996 quilômetros quadrados. Mannar é a cidade principal do distrito de Mannar e é administrada por um Conselho Urbano. A cidade está situada na Ilha de Mannar, com vista para a Baía de Mannar, e abriga o histórico Templo Ketheeswaram. No passado, a cidade era conhecida como um centro de pesca de pérolas, mencionado no século II d.C. no Periplus do Mar Eritreu. Mannar é conhecida por suas árvores de baobá e pelo Forte de Mannar, construído pelos portugueses em 1560 e tomado pelos holandeses em 1658, posteriormente reconstruído; seus muros e baluartes permanecem intactos, embora o interior esteja em grande parte destruído. Visualmente, a cidade moderna é dominada por igrejas, templos hindus e mesquitas. A Igreja Católica possui uma diocese com sede na cidade. A cidade está conectada ao restante do Sri Lanka pela Linha Mannar. Durante a Guerra Civil do Sri Lanka, entre 1983 e 2009, a cidade foi ocupada pelo LTTE.
O distrito de Mannar é único em sua vegetação e vida selvagem, contrastando com o restante do Sri Lanka. A Ilha de Mannar é um dos poucos lugares no Sri Lanka onde as árvores de baobá prosperam. Macacos adoram seus frutos, por isso a árvore às vezes é chamada de "árvore-pão-de-macaco".
O dugongo é um mamífero marinho de tamanho médio, encontrado na Baía de Mannar, em Nachchikuda, na ilha de Jaffna e próximo à Ponte de Adão. O status de conservação do IUCN é vulnerável devido à caça excessiva para alimentação e captura acidental em redes de pesca.
Uma espécie de tarântula criticamente ameaçada chamada Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica foi encontrada pela primeira vez no Sri Lanka, na região de Mannar. Esta foi a primeira vez que a aranha foi registrada fora da Índia. O Santuário de Vankalai, reconhecido internacionalmente como uma área importante para aves de zonas úmidas pelo Convênio de Ramsar, está localizado no continente, logo ao sul da Ilha de Mannar.
