Distrito de Jaffna
O Distrito de Jaffna é um dos 25 distritos de Sri Lanka, a divisão administrativa de segundo nível do país. O distrito é administrado por um Secretariado Distrital, chefiado por um Secretário Distrital (anteriormente conhecido como Agente do Governo), nomeado pelo governo central de Sri Lanka. A capital do distrito é a cidade de Jaffna.
Entre o século V a.C. e o século XIII d.C., o atual Distrito de Jaffna fez parte de vários reinos, como Pandya, Chola, Pallava, Kalinga e Rajarata. O Distrito de Jaffna foi depois parte do antigo reino de Jaffna. O distrito passou então para o controle português, holandês e britânico. Em 1815, os britânicos tomaram o controle de toda a ilha de Ceilão. Eles dividiram a ilha em três estruturas administrativas baseadas em etnia: Sinhalas da Baixa, Sinhalas de Kandy e Tâmiles. O Distrito de Jaffna fez parte da administração Tamil. Em 1833, de acordo com as recomendações da Comissão Colebrooke-Cameron, as estruturas administrativas baseadas em etnia foram unificadas em uma única administração dividida em cinco províncias geográficas. O Distrito de Jaffna, junto com o Distrito de Mannar e o Distrito de Vanni, formaram a nova Província do Norte. Quando Ceilão obteve independência, Jaffna foi um dos três distritos localizados na Província do Norte. Partes do distrito foram transferidas para o recém-criado Distrito de Mullaitivu em setembro de 1978. O Distrito de Kilinochchi foi separado da parte sul do Distrito de Jaffna em fevereiro de 1984.
O Distrito de Jaffna está localizado no extremo norte de Sri Lanka, na Província do Norte, e ocupa a maior parte da Península de Jaffna. Sua área é de 1.025 quilômetros quadrados (396 milhas quadradas). Geograficamente, é dividido em quatro áreas:
