Distrito de Hambantota
O distrito de Hambantota está localizado na costa sudeste de Sri Lanka. Possui uma área de 2.593 km² e Hambantota apresenta um clima tropical úmido e seco tropical, sem uma verdadeira estação seca, mas com significativamente menos chuva de janeiro a março e novamente de junho a agosto. As chuvas mais intensas caem em outubro e novembro.
A capital do distrito é a cidade de Hambantota. Lá se encontram as sedes administrativas, bem como o centro de produção de sal. Outras cidades importantes incluem Tangalle, Ambalantota, Tissamaharama e Beliatta.
A aproximadamente 240 km de Colombo, Hambantota está em processo de transformação em um porto estratégico e centro comercial, com um grande desenvolvimento de infraestrutura. Cercada por amplas praias de areia, Hambantota é uma localização conveniente de onde se pode visitar as atrações turísticas nas proximidades.
Hambantota está situada no ponto mais próximo da principal rota de navegação, a rua Malaca / Canal de Suez, que conecta o Oriente e o Ocidente. O sol chinês se levantou em Hambantota: um novo e enorme porto financiado pela China porto em Hambantota está sendo construído e abrirá em novembro de 2010.
Um novo aeroporto, compatível com os mais recentes aviões Airbus A380, está em construção em Hambantota, e há um estádio internacional de críquete em Hambantota.
Os primeiros jardins botânicos de Sri Lanka na zona seca, que em breve serão os maiores da ilha, estão sendo desenvolvidos em um terreno de 300 acres em Mirijjawila, Hambantota. O Jardim tem como objetivo conservar a enorme área verde e a biodiversidade na região ao redor de Hambantota. No passado, Hambantota era uma vila na selva; no próximo ano, Hambantota se tornará um milagre de desenvolvimento moderno da noite para o dia.
