Distretto di Mannar
Il distretto di Sri Lanka si trova nel nord-ovest della Provincia del Nord. Ha una superficie di 1.996 chilometri quadrati. Mannar è la città principale del distretto di Mannar ed è amministrata da un Consiglio Urbano. La città è situata sull'isola di Mannar, affacciata sul Golfo di Mannar ed è sede dell'storico Tempio di Ketheeswaram. In passato, la città era rinomata come centro per la pesca delle perle, menzionata nel II secolo d.C. nel Periplo del Mare Eritreo. Mannar è nota per i suoi baobab e per il Forte di Mannar, costruito dai portoghesi nel 1560 e occupato dai olandesi nel 1658 con successiva ricostruzione; le sue mura e bastioni sono intatti, anche se l'interno è in gran parte distrutto. Visivamente, la città moderna è dominata da chiese, templi indù e moschee. La Chiesa Cattolica ha una diocesi con sede nella città. La città è collegata al resto dello Sri Lanka tramite la linea Mannar. Durante la guerra civile dello Sri Lanka tra il 1983 e il 2009, la città è stata occupata dai LTTE.
Il distretto di Mannar è unico per la sua vegetazione e fauna, in contrasto con il resto dello Sri Lanka. L'isola di Mannar è uno dei pochi luoghi in Sri Lanka dove prosperano i baobab. Le scimmie amano i frutti, per questo l'albero è talvolta chiamato "albero del pane delle scimmie".
Il dugongo è un mammifero marino di medie dimensioni che si trova nella Baia di Mannar, a Nachchikuda, sull'isola di Jaffna e vicino al Ponte di Adamo. Lo stato di conservazione secondo l'IUCN è vulnerabile a causa della caccia eccessiva per il cibo e della cattura accidentale nelle reti da pesca.
Una specie di tarantola in pericolo critico nota come Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica è stata trovata per la prima volta nello Sri Lanka nella regione di Mannar. È stata la prima volta che questo ragno è stato registrato al di fuori dell'India. Il Santuario di Vankalai, riconosciuto a livello internazionale come un'area importante per gli uccelli delle zone umide secondo la Convenzione di Ramsar, si trova sulla terraferma appena a sud dell'isola di Mannar.
