Distretto di Jaffna
Il distretto di Jaffna è uno dei 25 distretti dello Sri Lanka, il secondo livello di divisione amministrativa del paese. Il distretto è amministrato da un Segretariato di distretto guidato da un Segretario di distretto (precedentemente conosciuto come Agente del Governo) nominato dal governo centrale di Sri Lanka. La capitale del distretto è la città di Jaffna.
Tra il V secolo a.C. e il XIII secolo d.C., l'attuale distretto di Jaffna faceva parte di vari regni come Pandya, Chola, Pallava, Kalinga e Rajarata. Il distretto di Jaffna è successivamente diventato parte del regno pre-coloniale di Jaffna. Successivamente il distretto passò sotto il controllo portoghese, olandese e britannico. Nel 1815 i britannici ottennero il controllo sull'intera isola di Ceylon. Divisero l'isola in tre strutture amministrative basate sull'etnia: i Sinhalese delle pianure, i Sinhalese di Kandy e i Tamil. Il distretto di Jaffna faceva parte dell'amministrazione tamil. Nel 1833, in conformità con le raccomandazioni della Commissione Colebrooke-Cameron, le strutture amministrative basate sull'etnia furono unificate in un'unica amministrazione suddivisa in cinque province geografiche. Il distretto di Jaffna, insieme al distretto di Mannar e al distretto di Vanni, formò la nuova Provincia del Nord. Quando Ceylon ottenne l'indipendenza, Jaffna era uno dei tre distretti situati nella Provincia del Nord. Alcune parti del distretto furono trasferite nel nuovo distretto di Mullaitivu nel settembre 1978. Il distretto di Kilinochchi fu separato dalla parte meridionale del distretto di Jaffna nel febbraio 1984.
Il distretto di Jaffna si trova nell'estremo nord dello Sri Lanka, nella Provincia del Nord, e occupa la maggior parte della penisola di Jaffna. Ha una superficie di 1.025 chilometri quadrati (396 miglia quadrate). È geograficamente diviso in quattro aree:
