Distretto di Trincomalee
Il distretto di Trincomalee è uno dei 25 distretti di Sri Lanka, la divisione amministrativa di secondo livello del paese. Il distretto è amministrato da un Segretariato distrettuale guidato da un Segretario distrettuale (precedentemente noto come Agente del Governo), nominato dal governo centrale di Sri Lanka. La capitale del distretto è la città di Trincomalee.
La popolazione del distretto, come quella del resto dell'est e del nord, è stata fortemente influenzata dalla guerra civile. La guerra ha causato la morte di circa 100.000 persone. La storia registrata di Trincomalee si estende per oltre duemilacinquecento anni, iniziando con l'insediamento civile associato al tempio di Koneswaram nell'era pre-moderna. Una delle città più antiche dell'Asia, ha svolto un ruolo importante come porto marittimo nella storia commerciale internazionale dell'isola con il Sud-Est asiatico. Dal suo villaggio suburbano di Kankuveli, alcune delle prime ricerche mediche in Asia presso il "Agathiyar Thapanam", l'università medica Siddhar Tamil, fondata da Agastya, hanno aiutato a diffondere la cultura Tamil Tamraparniyan in tutto il continente.
