Distretto di Kurunegala
Kurunegala è un distretto situato nella Provincia Nord-Occidentale dello Sri Lanka. Ha una superficie di 4.812,7 km² (481.270 ettari) e comprende 30 Segretariati Divisionali, 1.610 divisioni Grama Niladari e un totale di 4.476 villaggi. Include inoltre 14 collegi elettorali, 2 Consigli Municipali, 19 Consigli Urbani, 15 Ministri parlamentari, 47 Membri del Consiglio Provinciale, 15 Ministri e 337 Membri dei Consigli Locali.
Dal punto di vista geografico, il distretto di Kurunegala è delimitato da cinque distretti. A nord confina con il distretto di Anuradhapura, a est con il distretto di Matale, a sud con i distretti di Gampaha e Kegalle, e a ovest con il distretto di Puttalam. La posizione geografica del distretto si estende tra le latitudini nord 2°28′ – 3°33′ e le longitudini est 104′ – 178′.
Kurunegala possiede un contesto storico molto speciale rispetto agli altri distretti, poiché comprende quattro antichi regni, ovvero Panduwasnuwara, Kurunegala, Yapahuwa e Dambadeniya.
In termini percentuali rispetto alla popolazione totale dello Sri Lanka, il distretto di Kurunegala rappresenta circa il 7,3%. Secondo i dati del censimento, la popolazione stimata di Kurunegala nel 2001 era di circa 1,4 milioni di abitanti. La maggioranza dei residenti del distretto di Kurunegala appartiene al gruppo etnico maggioritario dei singalesi. Altre minoranze etniche includono i musulmani dello Sri Lanka, i tamil dello Sri Lanka, i burgher e i malesi. I membri delle minoranze etniche vivono in tutte le parti del distretto.
