Distretto di Matara
Matara è una città sulla costa meridionale di Sri Lanka, a 160 km da Colombo. È una delle più grandi città del paese. La città conserva numerose vestigia del passato coloniale dello Sri Lanka. Il terzo fiume più lungo, il Nilwala Ganga (Fiume Blu), divide la città vecchia da quella nuova.
Nel XVI e XVIII secolo, Matara fu governata dai portoghesi e dai olandesi. La cultura e l’architettura sono ancora visibili nella zona. Il celebre faro di Point Dondra fu costruito dagli olandesi ed è considerato uno dei più belli e antichi del paese. Matara è una città commerciale vivace e prospera, quasi indipendente dal turismo, offrendo una finestra affascinante sulla vita moderna nello Sri Lanka. Le principali attrazioni includono le mura, l’architettura olandese, il ben conservato Forte di Matara e la vita di strada animata.
Tempio Paravi Dupatha è un tempio buddista relativamente moderno situato su Pigeon Island, una piccola isola di fronte alla città. Vi si accede tramite un elegante ponte pedonale a sospensione costruito nel 2008 (che sostituì il precedente distrutto dallo tsunami del 2004). Il tempio si trova in giardini attraenti e ospita numerose statue del Buddha e una replica dell’impronta del piede di Adam’s Peak.
Forte di Matara fu costruito dai portoghesi nel 1560 e sostanzialmente ricostruito dagli olandesi nel 1640, dopo la conquista di Galle. Il forte, con un grande bastione di pietra, occupa il promontorio tra la laguna del fiume Nilwala e l’oceano.
La Chiesa Riformata Olandese di Matara fu costruita all’interno del Forte di Matara dagli olandesi nel 1706 e ristrutturata ampiamente nel 1767 dopo la ricostruzione del forte del 1762.
Star Fort si trova sul lato occidentale del fiume Nilwala. Il forte fu costruito dagli olandesi dopo la Rivolta di Matara nel 1761 per proteggere il forte principale dagli attacchi dal fiume. La costruzione dell’unico forte a forma di stella fu completata nel 1765.
Vecchio mercato Nupe fu costruito nel 1784 dagli olandesi, a circa 3,2 km dal Forte di Matara.
Chiesa di Santa Maria si trova su Beach Road. La data sul cancello (1769) fa riferimento alla ricostruzione dopo la Rivolta di Matara del 1762.
