Distretto di Vavuniya
Il distretto di Vavuniya è uno dei 25 distretti di Sri Lanka, la divisione amministrativa di secondo livello del paese. Il distretto è amministrato da un segretariato distrettuale, che è guidato da un segretario distrettuale (precedentemente conosciuto come agente del governo) nominato dal governo centrale di Sri Lanka. La capitale del distretto è la città di Vavuniya.
Tra il 5° secolo a.C. e il 13° secolo d.C. l'odierno distretto di Vavuniya faceva parte del Rajarata. Successivamente, il distretto di Vavuniya fu governato dai capi Vanniar, che pagavano tributi al pre-coloniale regno di Jaffna. Il distretto passò poi sotto il controllo dei portoghesi, dei tedeschi e dei britannici. Nel 1815 i britannici presero il controllo dell'intera isola di Ceylon. Divisero l'isola in tre strutture amministrative basate sull'etnia: i singalesi delle terre basse, i singalesi di Kandyan e i tamil. Il distretto, che allora si chiamava Vanni District, faceva parte dell'amministrazione tamil. Nel 1833, secondo le raccomandazioni della commissione Colebrooke-Cameron, le strutture amministrative basate sull'etnia furono unificate in una sola amministrazione divisa in cinque province geografiche. Il distretto di Vanni, insieme al distretto di Jaffna e al distretto di Mannar, formò la nuova Provincia del Nord.
Il distretto di Vanni fu successivamente rinominato distretto di Mullaitivu e poi distretto di Vavuniya. Quando Ceylon ottenne l'indipendenza, Vavuniya era uno dei tre distretti situati nella Provincia del Nord. Il distretto di Mullaitivu fu separato dalla parte settentrionale del distretto di Vavuniya nel settembre del 1978.
Parte del distretto di Vavuniya furono sotto il controllo dei ribelli Tigri di Liberazione del Tamil Eelam per molti anni durante la guerra civile. L'intero distretto fu riconquistato dall'esercito dello Sri Lanka nel 2008.
