المحافظة الشمالية
تقع المقاطعة الشمالية في شمال سريلانكا على بعد 35 كم فقط من الهند. وتبلغ مساحتها 8,884 كم². يحد المقاطعة خليج مانار وخليج بالك من الغرب، ومضيق بالك من الشمال الغربي، وخليج البنغال من الشمال والشرق، وتشترك في الحدود من الجنوب مع المقاطعات الشرقية والشمالية الوسطى والشمالية الغربية. تتكون المقاطعة الشمالية في سريلانكا من خمس مناطق إدارية: جافنا، كيلينوتشي، موليتيفو، فافونيا و مانار، بينما تعتبر جافنا العاصمة الإقليمية والمقر الإداري لـ منطقة جافنا وتقع على شبه جزيرة بنفس الاسم.
تقع جافنا على بعد حوالي ستة أميال من كانداروداي، التي كانت تعد مركزًا تجاريًا مشهورًا في شبه جزيرة جافنا منذ العصور القديمة. كانت ضاحية جافنا، نالور، عاصمة مملكة جافنا في العصور الوسطى لمدة أربعة قرون. قبل الحرب الأهلية في سريلانكا، كانت ثاني أكبر مدينة من حيث عدد السكان في سريلانكا بعد كولومبو. لكن بسبب تمرد التاميل، شهدت المدينة انخفاضًا في عدد السكان. منذ نهاية الحرب الأهلية عام 2009، بدأ اللاجئون والنازحون داخليًا بالعودة إلى منازلهم، وبدأت عمليات إعادة الإعمار من قبل الحكومة والقطاع الخاص.

المقاطعة الشمالية

كشفت الحفريات التي أجراها السير بول إي. بيرييس خلال عامي 1918 و1919 في عاصمة جافنا القديمة كانداروداي وفاليبورام، وهي مدينة ساحلية تبعد ستة كيلومترات عن بوينت بيدرو، عن عملات تسمى "بوراناس" وعصي "كحل" تعود إلى عام 2000 قبل الميلاد، مشابهة في الشكل للعصي المستخدمة لرسم الصور في مصر، مما يشير إلى أن الجزء الشمالي من سريلانكا كان مستوطنة مزدهرة قبل وصول الأمير فيجايا. في السجل التاريخي "المهافامسا"، حوالي القرن السادس قبل الميلاد، هناك أوصاف لقبائل غريبة مثل اليخاس الذين عاشوا في مركز الجزيرة، والناجاس الذين عبدوا الأفاعي ويعيشون في الشمال والغرب والشرق من الجزيرة، والتي كانت تعرف تاريخيًا باسم "ناغاديبا". كانت مدينة جافنا، إلى جانب باقي شبه جزيرة جافنا، جزءًا من مملكة تاماباني في عام 543 قبل الميلاد. تصف السجلات التاريخية السنهالية، بما في ذلك "المهافامسا"، مدينة جافنا كجزء حيوي

Uva ProvinceThe Uva Province consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala while the capital of the province is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

North Western ProvinceNorth Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

Northern ProvinceThe Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.
