المنطقة الشرقية
إحدى محافظات سريلانكا المعروفة بشكل رئيسي بشواطئها الذهبية ومينائها الطبيعي، المحافظة الشرقية التي تبلغ مساحتها 9,996 كم² وتتألف من ثلاث مناطق إدارية هي ترينكومالي، باتيكالوا و أمبارا. بين عامي 1988 و2006، تم دمج المحافظة مؤقتًا مع المحافظة الشمالية لتشكيل محافظة الشمال-الشرق. ومع ذلك، فقد تم رسميًا فصل محافظة الشمال-الشرق إلى المحافظتين الشمالية والشرقية في 1 يناير 2007 وفقًا لقرار المحكمة العليا.

ترينكومالي هي عاصمة المحافظة الشرقية وتقع على الساحل الشرقي للجزيرة، على بعد حوالي 113 ميلاً جنوب جافنا. تشتهر ترينكومالي عالميًا بمينائها الطبيعي العميق. بنيت المدينة على شبه جزيرة تقسم الميناء الداخلي والخارجي. تحتوي المدينة على معبد كونيسوارام القديم الشهير المشار إليه باسمها التاريخي التاميلي ثيروكو نامالاي (Thirukonamalai) والذي اشتُق منه الاسم الإنجليزي للمدينة، وقد كانت ميناءً بحريًا لعب دورًا رئيسيًا في التاريخ البحري والتجاري الدولي لسريلانكا. يُشار إليها باسم جوكانا (Gokanna) بالبالية أو جوكارنا (Gokarna) بالسنسكريتية.
يشتهر خليج ميناء ترينكومالي بحجمه الكبير وأمنه؛ وعلى عكس أي ميناء آخر في بحر الهند، يمكن الوصول إليه بجميع أنواع السفن في جميع الأحوال الجوية. تُستخدم الشواطئ لممارسة ركوب الأمواج والغوص وصيد الأسماك ومشاهدة الحيتان. تحتوي المدينة أيضًا على أكبر حصن هولندي في سريلانكا. وتضم قواعد بحرية رئيسية للقوات البحرية السريلانكية وقاعدة للقوات الجوية السريلانكية. تقع المدينة على تل في نهاية تكوين طبيعي للأرض يشبه القوس؛ ويُبنى المعبد على صخرة سواتمي، والتي كانت تاريخيًا تُعرف باسم كونا-ما-مالاي (Kona-ma-Malai)، وهو جرف على شبه الجزيرة ينحدر 400 قدم مباشرة إلى البحر.
جذب ميناء ترينكومالي الطبيعي العميق البحارة مثل ماركو بولو، بطليموس، والتجار البحريين من الصين وشرق آسيا منذ العصور القديمة. تُعرف المدينة اختصارًا باسم ترينكو (Trinco)، وكانت ميناء بحريًا منذ أيام ملوك سريلانكا القدماء. أقدم إشارة معروفة إلى ميناء جوكانا موجودة في المهافامسا (Mahavamsa)، حيث يُذكر أنه في القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد، عندما فشل الملك فيجايا في إقناع شقيقه بالمجيء إلى سريلانكا ليكون خليفته، نزل ابنه الأصغر بانديوسديڤا في جوكانا وتوج لاحقًا في أوباتيساجاما.
تمتلك ترينكومالي العديد من أماكن العبادة. من بينها ضريح كونيسفارام الذي هدمه البرتغاليون في عام 1622 (والذين أطلقوا عليه اسم "معبد الأعمدة الألف")، والذين حصنوا التلال بالمواد الناتجة عن هدمه. تم الاحتفاظ ببعض القطع الأثرية من المعبد المهدوم في متحف لشبونة بما في ذلك النقوش الحجرية.
مدخل الطريق المؤدي إلى كونيسوارام هو في الواقع مدخل ما كان يُعرف بحصن فريدريك (Fort Fredrick). تم بناء الحصن في 1623 بواسطة البرتغاليين واستولى عليه الهولنديون في 1639. ثم خضع لمرحلة من التفكيك وإعادة البناء، وتعرض لهجوم واستولى عليه الفرنسيون في 1672.

Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

North Western ProvinceNorth Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

Northern ProvinceThe Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.
