Anuradhapura City
Anuradhapura is belongs to the North Central Province in to Sri Lanka. Anuradhapura is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, famous for its well-preserved ruins of ancient Lankan civilization. The city, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies 205 km north of the current capital Colombo in Sri Lanka.
Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura is een stad in het district Anuradhapura in de Noordelijke Centrale Provincie van Sri Lanka. Deze heilige stad werd gesticht rond een stekje van de ‘Boom van Verlichting’, de vijgenboom waaronder de Boeddha verlichting bereikte, dat in de 3e eeuw v.Chr. naar hier werd gebracht door Sanghamitta, de grondlegger van een orde van boeddhistische nonnen. Anuradhapura was gedurende 1300 jaar een bloeiende politieke en religieuze hoofdstad, maar werd verlaten na een invasie in 993. Na jarenlang verborgen te zijn geweest in een dichte jungle, is deze prachtige plaats met haar paleizen, kloosters en monumenten opnieuw toegankelijk.
Tegenwoordig is Anuradhapura een van de heiligste steden ter wereld voor boeddhisten. De stad is gevuld met oude dagoba’s, kloosters, paleizen, kunstmatige waterreservoirs en koninklijke parken. Dankzij de overblijfselen van de oude Sri Lankaanse beschaving werd zij in 1982 door UNESCO aangewezen als werelderfgoedlocatie onder de naam ‘Heilige Stad van Anuradhapura’.
Boeddhisme in Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura was een belangrijk intellectueel centrum van het vroege theravada-boeddhisme en de thuisbasis van vooraanstaande boeddhistische geleerden zoals Buddhaghosa. Tijdens de regering van koning Dhatusena (455–473) vond een redactie van de theravada-canon plaats, terwijl tegelijkertijd 18 nieuwe vihara’s (tempelcomplexen) werden gebouwd en een standbeeld werd opgericht ter ere van Mahinda, de prins-monnik uit India die het boeddhisme naar het eiland bracht. In de latere periode van Anuradhapura steunden de koninklijke familie en de adel van Sri Lanka het boeddhisme sterk door kunstwerken te financieren en deze aan boeddhistische tempels te schenken. In ruil daarvoor ondersteunden de tempels en de lokale boeddhistische gemeenschap het gezag van de koning.
Bijzondere plaatsen in Anuradhapura:
Sri Maha Bodhi: Deze heilige vijgenboom in Anuradhapura wordt beschouwd als een afstammeling van de oorspronkelijke Bodhiboom waaronder de Boeddha verlichting bereikte. Het is een symbool van verlichting en een belangrijke pelgrimsplaats.
Ruwanweli Seya: Ook bekend als de Grote Stoepa, is deze oude stoepa een van de grootste in Sri Lanka. Hij bevat relikwieën van de Boeddha en is een belangrijk centrum voor boeddhistische verering.
Thuparamaya: Beschouwd als de oudste stoepa van Sri Lanka, waarin een relikwie van de Boeddha wordt bewaard. Het heeft unieke architectonische kenmerken en is een belangrijke historische plaats voor boeddhisten.
Lovamahapaya: Ook bekend als het Bronzen Paleis, is dit oude bouwwerk een belangrijke archeologische site. Het diende als kloostercomplex en toont indrukwekkende oude architectuur.
Abhayagiri Dagaba: Deze grote stoepa maakte deel uit van het Abhayagiri-klooster. Het speelde een belangrijke rol in de verspreiding van het boeddhisme in Sri Lanka en staat bekend om zijn omvang en historische betekenis.
Jetavanaramaya: Dit was ooit een van de hoogste bouwwerken in de oude wereld. Deze stoepa in Anuradhapura bevat relikwieën van de Boeddha en is een opmerkelijk staaltje van techniek en een belangrijke pelgrimsplaats.
Mirisaweti Stoepa: Deze stoepa is verbonden met de legende van koning Dutugemunu. Hij symboliseert de eenwording van Sri Lanka en dient als een belangrijke plaats voor boeddhistische verering en meditatie.

It is the southern branch from the historical Sri Maha Bodhi at Buddha Gaya in India under which Buddha attained Enlightenment. It was planted in 288 BC, and is the oldest living human-planted tree in the world with a known planting date.

RuwanweliseyaThe Ruwanweli Maha Seya, also known as the Mahathupa (the Great Thupa) is a stupa (a hemispherical structure containing relics) in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. Two quarts or one Dona of the Buddha's relics are enshrined in the stupa, making it the largest collection of his relics anywhere. It was built by Sinhalese King Dutugemunu in c. 140 B.C., who became king of Sri Lanka after a war in which the Chola King Elāra (Ellalan) was defeated.

ThuparamayaThuparamaya is the first Buddhist temple that was constructed, after the arrival of mahinda thero(mahindagamanaya) in Sri Lanka. Located in the sacred area of Mahamewna park, the Thuparamaya Stupa is the earliest Dagoba to be constructed in the island, dating back to the reign of King Devanampiya Tissa (247-207 BC). The temple has been formally recognised by the Government as an archaeological site in Sri Lanka.

Mirisawetiya StupaThe Mirisaweti Stupa is a memorial building, a stupa, situated in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. King Dutugamunu (161 BC to 137 BC) built the Mirisaveti Stupa after defeating King Elara. After placing the Buddha relics in the sceptre, he had gone to Tissa Wewa for a bath leaving the sceptre.

LankaramaLankarama is a stupa built by King Valagamba, in an ancient place at Galhebakada in the ancient kingdom of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. Nothing is known about the ancient form of the stupa, and later this was renovated. The ruins show that there are rows of stone pillars and it is no doubt that there has been a house built encircling the stupa (vatadage) to cover it.

In the sacred city of Anuradhapura and in the vicinity are a large number of ruins. The ruins consist of three classes of buildings, dagobas, monastic buildings, and pokuna (ponds). The city had some of the most complex irrigation systems of the ancient world, situated in the dry zone of the country the administration built many tanks to irrigate the land. Most of the civilians are Sinhala, while Tamils and Sri Lankan Moors live in the district.
