Dialium ovoideum (Gal Siyambala) is a native tree species found in Sri Lanka’s dry and intermediate zones. Belonging to the legume family, this hardy tree is known for its distinctive round, dark brown pods that contain a tangy, sweet-sour pulp and hard seeds. The fruit is cherished both as a natural snack and for its traditional medicinal uses.

The pulp of Gal Siyambala is rich in nutrients and antioxidants. It is often consumed fresh or made into refreshing drinks, especially during the hot season. In rural areas, children commonly enjoy cracking open the pods and savoring the sticky, flavorful pulp inside.

Apart from its culinary appeal, Gal Siyambala also plays a role in traditional medicine, where it is used to aid digestion and boost immunity.
