Distretto di Ratnapura
Ratnapura è un distretto della Provincia di Sabaragamuwa, nello Sri Lanka. È uno dei 25 distretti dello Sri Lanka e rappresenta il secondo livello di divisione amministrativa del paese. Il distretto è amministrato da un Segretariato distrettuale guidato da un Segretario distrettuale (precedentemente noto come Government Agent), nominato dal governo centrale dello Sri Lanka.
Il distretto copre un’area di 3.275 km² e, secondo il censimento del 2012, conta una popolazione di 1.082.277 abitanti. La città si trova nella parte sud-occidentale dello Sri Lanka, nella cosiddetta zona umida. Le precipitazioni provengono principalmente dai monsoni di sud-ovest da maggio a settembre. Durante i restanti mesi dell’anno si registrano comunque precipitazioni considerevoli dovute a piogge convettive. La precipitazione media annua è di circa 4.000–5.000 mm. La temperatura media varia tra 24 e 35 °C, con elevati livelli di umidità. La città si trova a 21 m (69 piedi) sul livello del mare.
Ratnapura è situata sul fiume Kalu Ganga (Fiume Nero), nel centro-sud dello Sri Lanka, a circa 101 km (63 miglia) a sud-est della capitale del paese, Colombo. Ratnapura è anche scritto come Rathnapura. Il nome «Ratnapura» è una parola sanscrita che significa «città delle gemme», derivata dai termini sanscriti pura (città) e ratna (pietra preziosa). Molti dei principali commercianti di gemme dello Sri Lanka operano da questa città. Oltre all’estrazione delle gemme, la città è nota per la produzione di riso e frutta. Grandi piantagioni di tè e gomma circondano la città. Il tè coltivato in questa regione è noto come tè di pianura. Da Ratnapura parte anche un percorso verso Sri Pada. Le escursioni includono la Riserva Forestale di Sinharaja e il Parco Nazionale di Udawalawe. L’area circostante è una destinazione popolare per il trekking e un ottimo luogo per il birdwatching.
