Noordwestelijke provincie
Noordwestelijke Provincie bestaat uit twee bestuurlijke districten, namelijk Kurunegala en Puttalam. De provinciale hoofdstad is Kurunegala, met een bevolking van 28.571 inwoners. De provincie staat bekend om zijn kokosplantages. Andere belangrijke steden in deze provincie zijn Chilaw (24.712) en Puttalam (45.661), die beide kleine vissersdorpen zijn. De meerderheid van de bevolking in de provincie is Singalees. Er is ook een aanzienlijke minderheid van Sri Lankaanse Moors rond Puttalam en Sri Lankaanse Tamils in Udappuwa en Munneswarama. Vissen, garnalenkweek en rubberplantages zijn andere belangrijke industrieën in de regio. De provincie heeft een oppervlakte van 7.888 km² en een bevolking van 2.184.136. Het klimaat is tropisch, met een uitgesproken droog seizoen, en gemiddelde temperaturen van 20°C in januari tot 25°C in maart. Het zuiden van de provincie is natter, met een jaarlijkse neerslag van 2000 mm, terwijl het noorden van de provincie een van de droogste gebieden van Sri Lanka is met een gemiddelde jaarlijkse neerslag van 1100 mm.
De provincie is rijk aan archeologische vindplaatsen en was de zetel van vier middeleeuwse koninkrijken van Sri Lanka tussen het midden van de 12e en het midden van de 14e eeuw. Hoewel de koningen van Sri Lanka door buitenlandse invasies werden gedwongen hun hoofdsteden te verplaatsen, bouwden zij toch indrukwekkende citadellen in gebieden zoals Panduwasnuwara, Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa en Kurunegala. Indrukwekkende overblijfselen van deze citadellen, paleizen, boeddhistische tempels en kloosters bieden adembenemende bezienswaardigheden voor bezoekers.
De provincie herbergt ook andere oude boeddhistische rots-tempels, grotendeels met wortels uit de 1e eeuw v.Chr., met wand- en plafondschilderingen, kolossale Boeddhabeelden, stenen inscripties en sculpturen die dateren van de vroege middeleeuwen tot de 18e eeuw.
Met de fonkelende blauwe branding van de Indische Oceaan en schilderachtige tropische lagunes, heeft de provincie een lange strook brede, zonovergoten gouden stranden. Deze stranden strekken zich uit van Waikkal in het zuiden tot de Dutch Bay in het district Puttalam.
Enkele van de beste strandresorts van de provincie zijn Marawila, Talawila, Kalpitiya en Waikkal. Deze stranden liggen vaak aan een lagune of rivierfront en vormen uitstekende uitvalsbases voor een verblijf op het strand. Sommige strandresorts bieden ook de mogelijkheid om onderwaterkoraalwonderen te bekijken bij Kandakuliya en Karaitivu. Veel vissersdorpen zijn te vinden in de kustgebieden.

Western ProvinceThe most densely populated province of Sri Lanka, the Western Province which is 3,593 km2 in extent is home to the country’s legislative capital Sri Jayewardenepura. It is also home to the country’s commercial hub, Colombo.

Central ProvinceThe Central Province is located in the central hills of Sri Lanka comprising of three administrative districts: Kandy, Matale and Nuwara-Eliya. The land area of the province is 5,575 km2 which is 8.6% of the total land area of Sri Lanka.

Southern ProvinceThe Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of three districts: Galle, Matara and Hambantota. Farming and fishing are the main sources of income for the vast majority of the people in this region.

Uva ProvinceThe Uva Province consists of two districts: Badulla and Moneragala while the capital of the province is Badulla. Uva is bordered by the Eastern, Southern and Central provinces.

Sabaragamuwa ProvinceSabaragamuwa is yet another province of Sri Lanka, located in the south-central region of the island and is comprised of two administrative districts: Ratnapura and Kegalle.

North Western ProvinceNorth Western Province is comprised of two administrative districts viz. Kurunegala and Puttalam. The provincial capital is Kurunegala that has a population of 28,571. The province is well known for its coconut plantations.

Northern ProvinceThe Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka just 35 km from India. It has a land area of 8,884 km’. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north west, the Bay of Bengal to the north and east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.

Eastern ProvinceAnother province of Sri Lanka mostly known for its golden beaches and the natural harbour, the Eastern Province which is 9,996 km2 in extent consists of three administrative districts namely Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara.
