District de Ratnapura
Ratnapura est un district de la province de Sabaragamuwa, au Sri Lanka. Il est l’un des 25 districts du Sri Lanka et constitue le deuxième niveau de division administrative du pays. Le district est administré par un secrétariat de district dirigé par un secrétaire de district (anciennement appelé Government Agent), nommé par le gouvernement central du Sri Lanka.
Il couvre une superficie de 3 275 km² et comptait une population de 1 082 277 habitants selon le recensement de 2012. La ville est située dans la partie sud-ouest du Sri Lanka, dans la zone dite humide. Les précipitations proviennent principalement des moussons du sud-ouest, de mai à septembre. Durant le reste de l’année, des précipitations importantes sont également enregistrées en raison de pluies convectives. Les précipitations annuelles moyennes sont d’environ 4 000 à 5 000 mm. La température moyenne varie entre 24 et 35 °C, avec un taux d’humidité élevé. La ville se situe à 21 m (69 pieds) au-dessus du niveau de la mer.
Ratnapura est située sur la Kalu Ganga (rivière Noire), dans le centre-sud du Sri Lanka, à environ 101 km (63 miles) au sud-est de la capitale du pays, Colombo. Ratnapura s’écrit également Rathnapura. Le nom « Ratnapura » est un mot sanskrit signifiant « ville des gemmes », dérivé des mots pura (ville) et ratna (pierre précieuse). De nombreux négociants de pierres précieuses renommés au Sri Lanka opèrent depuis cette ville. Outre l’extraction de gemmes, la ville est également connue pour la production de riz et de fruits. De vastes plantations de thé et d’hévéa entourent la ville. Le thé cultivé dans cette région est appelé thé de basse altitude. Une route vers Sri Pada part également de Ratnapura. Parmi les excursions figurent la réserve forestière de Sinharaja et le parc national d’Udawalawe. La région environnante est une destination prisée pour le trekking et un excellent site pour l’observation des oiseaux.
