Ville de Matara

Localisation : Matara est située à 160 km au sud de Colombo, sur la côte sud du Sri Lanka.

Accès à Matara : On peut accéder à Matara par la route principale Colombo–Galle–Matara ainsi que par la ligne ferroviaire.

Environnement : La rivière Nilwala se jette dans l’océan Indien au niveau de la plage de Matara, divisant la ville en deux zones : la vieille ville, située dans l’estuaire, et la ville nouvelle sur le continent. Le pont Mahanama à six voies relie le continent à l’estuaire.

Ville nouvelle : La ville nouvelle de Matara s’étend dans toutes les directions. La gare, les banques, les commerces, le terrain de cricket et le Fort en étoile hollandais y occupent des emplacements importants.

Vieille ville : La vieille ville de Matara, également connue comme le quartier colonial situé dans l’estuaire appelé Fort, abrite l’ancienne maison d’hôtes, l’Église réformée hollandaise, la gare routière, le marché et une mosquée.

Matara – Nœud de transport : Matara est le principal nœud de transport de la Province du Sud, avec une gare routière bien organisée située dans la vieille ville.

Hébergement à Matara : Les zones les plus prisées pour l’hébergement à Matara sont les plages de Polhena et Medawatta.

Plages de Polhena & Medawatta : La plage de Polhena offre de bonnes conditions pour le snorkeling, tandis que Medawatta est idéale pour le surf.

About Southern Province

The Southern Province of Sri Lanka is a small geographic area consisting of the districts of Galle,Matara and Hambantota. Subsistence farming and fishing is the main source of income for the vast majority of the people of this region.

Important landmarks of the Southern Province include the wildlife sanctuaries of the Yala and Udawalawe National Parks, the holy city of Kataragama, and the ancient cities of Tissamaharama, Kirinda and Galle. (Although Galle is an ancient city, almost nothing survives from before the Portuguese invasion.) During the Portuguese period there were two famous Sinhalese poets called Andare who was from Dickwella and Gajaman Nona who was from Denipitiya in Matara District, composing poems on common man.
