Vavuniya-distriktet
Okres Vavuniya je jedním z 25 okresů Srí Lanky, druhým úrovní administrativní dělení země. Okres je spravován okresním sekretariátem, který vede okresní tajemník (dříve známý jako vládní agent), jmenovaný centrální vládou Srí Lanky. Hlavním městem okresu je město Vavuniya.
Mezi 5. stoletím př. n. l. a 13. stoletím n. l. byla dnešní oblast Vavuniya součástí Rajaraty. Poté byl Vavuniya okrskem řízeným náčelníky Vanniar, kteří platili tribut předkoloniálnímu království Jaffna. Okres následně přešel pod kontrolu Portugalských, Holandských a Britských kolonizátorů. V roce 1815 Britové získali kontrolu nad celým ostrovem Ceylon. Rozdělili ostrov na tři administrativní struktury podle etnické příslušnosti: Sinhalci z nížinných oblastí, Kandijští Sinhalci a Tamili. Okres, který byl tehdy nazýván Vanni District, byl součástí tamilské administrativy. V roce 1833, podle doporučení Colebrooke-Cameronovy komise, byly etnicky rozdělené administrativní struktury sjednoceny do jediné správy, která byla rozdělena do pěti geografických provincií. Vanni District, spolu s Jaffna District a Mannar District, tvořil novou Severní provincii.
Vanni District byl později přejmenován na Mullaitivu District a poté na Vavuniya District. V době, kdy Ceylon získal nezávislost, byl Vavuniya jedním ze tří okresů nacházejících se v Severní provincii. Mullaitivu District byl vyčleněn ze severní části Vavuniya District v září 1978.
Části okresu Vavuniya byly pod kontrolou povstalecké organizace Tygři osvobození tamilského Ílámu po mnoho let během občanské války. Celý okres byl znovu obsazen srilanským vojskem v roce 2008.
