Mannar-distriktet
Mannar-distriktet ligger i den nordvestlige del af Sri Lanka i Nordprovinsen. Det har et areal på 1.996 kvadratkilometer (771 kvadratmil). Mannar er hovedbyen i Mannar-distriktet og styres af et byråd. Byen ligger på Mannar-øen med udsigt over Mannarbugten og er hjemsted for det historiske Ketheeswaram-templet. Tidligere var byen kendt som et centrum for perlefiskeri og er nævnt i det 2. århundrede e.Kr. værk Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. Mannar er kendt for sine baobabtræer og for sit fort, som blev bygget af portugiserne i 1560, erobret af hollænderne i 1658 og senere genopbygget; dets volde og bastioner er intakte, selv om det indre i høj grad er ødelagt. Visuelt domineres den moderne by af sine kirker, hinduistiske templer og moskeer. Den katolske kirke har et bispedømme med hovedsæde i byen. Med jernbane er byen forbundet med resten af Sri Lanka via Mannar-linjen. Den var besat af LTTE under den srilankanske borgerkrig mellem 1983 og 2009.
Mannar-distriktet er unikt med hensyn til sin vegetation og sit dyreliv og adskiller sig markant fra resten af Sri Lanka. Mannar-øen er et af de få steder i landet, hvor baobabtræer trives. Aber elsker frugten, og derfor kaldes træet nogle gange for abebrødstræet.
Dugongen er et mellemstort havpattedyr, som findes i Mannarbugten, Nachchikuda, på øen Jaffna og nær Adams Bro (Ram Sethu). Dens bevaringsstatus ifølge IUCN er sårbar på grund af overjagt for føde samt utilsigtet fangst i fiskegarn.
En kritisk truet tarantelart kendt som Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica blev for første gang fundet i Sri Lanka i Mannar-regionen. Dette var første gang, at edderkoppen blev registreret uden for Indien. Vankalai-fuglereservatet, som er internationalt anerkendt som et vigtigt vådområde for fugle under Ramsar-konventionen, ligger på fastlandet lige syd for Mannar-øen.
