Kandy-distriktet
Kandy-distriktet er et distrikt i Centralprovinsen i Sri Lanka. Dets areal er 1906,3 km². Distriktets hovedstad er Kandy. Kandy var den sidste hovedstad i den gamle kongelige æra i Sri Lanka. Byen ligger midt blandt bakkerne på Kandy-plateauet, som strækker sig over tropiske plantageområder, især te. Kandy er både en administrativ og religiøs by og er også hovedstad i Centralprovinsen. Byen er hjemsted for Tandrelikviet-templet (Sri Dalada Maligawa), et af de helligste tilbedelsessteder i den buddhistiske verden. Den blev erklæret et verdensarvssted af UNESCO i 1988.
Det er den næststørste by på øen og hovedstaden i Centralprovinsen i det moderne Sri Lanka. Dens geografiske placering har gjort den til et vigtigt transportknudepunkt på øen. Kandy er porten til Sri Lankas centrale højland og kan nås via hovedveje fra alle retninger. Jernbanelinjen fra Colombo, havnen på vestkysten, løber via Kandy til det fjerneste punkt, Badulla, i Central Highlands. Hovedvejene Colombo–Kandy og Kandy–Nuwara Eliya er blandt de mest naturskønne i Sri Lanka; Colombo–Kandy-vejen passerer gennem gummiplantager og rismarker, mens Kandy–Nuwara Eliya-vejen skærer gennem rismarker og endeløse te-plantager. Begge veje snor sig op ad de bugtede bakker. I øjeblikket er der igangværende forundersøgelser af en ny motorvej mellem Colombo og Kandy via Kadawatha og den naturskønne by Katugastota.
Kandy ligger i den bjergrige og tæt skovklædte indre del af øen. Byen er placeret mellem flere bjergkæder, herunder Knuckles-bjergkæden og Hanthana-bjergkæden, hvilket giver den en højde på omkring 500 meter (1.600 fod) over havets overflade. Den ligger ved siden af den kunstige Kandy-sø og syd for Udawatta Kele-reservatet. I dag bliver området af Udawatta Kele gradvist reduceret.
Klimaet er tropisk regnskovsklima. Da Kandy ligger midt på øen og i en højere højde, har byen relativt køligere og vådere temperaturer end resten af landets tropiske klima, især i kystområderne. Nuwara Eliya ligger syd for Kandy og har et endnu køligere klima på grund af sin højere beliggenhed. Ikke desto mindre er Kandys klima stadig tropisk, da de gennemsnitlige temperaturer året rundt ligger over 18 °C. Byen oplever en tørrere periode fra januar til april. Fra maj til juli samt fra oktober til december påvirkes området af monsunen, hvor vejret er ustabilt. Fra marts til midten af maj er der en mellemmonsunperiode med let regn og høj luftfugtighed. Luftfugtigheden ligger generelt mellem 70 % og 79 %.
Indbyggerne i Kandy har mange muligheder for fritid og underholdning i byen. Kandy er berømt for den årlige procession kendt som Esala Perahera, hvor en af de indre kister, der bruges til at dække Buddhas tandrelikvie, bæres i en storslået procession gennem byens gader.
