Matara-distriktet
Matara er en by på sydkysten af Sri Lanka, 160 km fra Colombo. Det er en af de største byer i Sri Lanka. Byen har mange rester af Sri Lankas koloniale fortid. Den tredje længste flod, Nilwala Ganga (Den Blå Flod), adskiller den gamle bydel fra den nye.
I det 16. og 18. århundrede blev Matara styret af portugiserne og hollænderne. Kultur og arkitektur kan stadig ses i området. Den populære fyrtårn på Point Dondra blev bygget af hollænderne og betragtes som et af de smukkeste og ældste fyrtårne i Sri Lanka. Matara er en travl og blomstrende handelsby, der næsten ikke afhænger af turisme – hvilket giver et fascinerende indblik i det moderne Sri Lankas liv. Hovedattraktioner inkluderer byens voldanlæg, hollandsk arkitektur, velbevaret Matara Fort og livligt gadeliv.
Paravi Dupatha-tempel er et relativt moderne buddhistisk tempel på Pigeon Island, en lille ø ud for byen. Templet nås via en elegant hængebro til fodgængere, bygget i 2008 (som erstattede den tidligere bro, der blev ødelagt af tsunamien i 2004). Templet ligger i smukke haver og huser adskillige statuer af Buddha samt en kopi af Adams Peak fodspor.
Matara Fort blev bygget af portugiserne i 1560 og væsentligt genopbygget af hollænderne i 1640 efter erobringen af Galle. Fortet består af en stor stenmur og ligger på halvøen mellem lagunen ved Nilwala-floden og havet.
Den hollandske reformerte kirke i Matara blev bygget inde i Matara Fort af hollænderne i 1706 og blev omfattende ombygget i 1767 efter fortets genopbygning i 1762.
Star Fort ligger på den vestlige side af Nilwala-floden. Fortet blev bygget af hollænderne efter Matara-oprøret i 1761 for at beskytte hovedfortet mod angreb fra floden. Byggeriet af den unikke stjerneformede fæstning blev færdiggjort i 1765.
Det gamle Nupe-marked blev bygget i 1784 af hollænderne, cirka 3,2 km fra Matara Fort.
St. Mary’s Church ligger på Beach Road. Datoen på porten (1769) henviser til genopbygningen efter Matara-oprøret i 1762.
