Nuwara Eliya-distriktet
Nuwara Eliya District er et distrikt i Central Province, Sri Lanka, med turistbyen Nuwara Eliya som centrum. Navnet betyder "byen på sletten (højlandet)" eller "lysets by". Byen er den administrative hovedstad i Nuwara Eliya District med et malerisk landskab og tempereret klima. Byen blev grundlagt af Samuel Baker, opdagelsesrejsende af Lake Albert og den øvre Nilen, i 1846. Nuwara Eliyas klima gjorde det til det primære tilflugtssted for britiske embedsmænd og plantageejere i Ceylon. Nuwara Eliya, kaldet Little England, var et bjergtilflugtssted, hvor de britiske kolonialister kunne dyrke deres fritidsaktiviteter som rævejagt, hjortejagt, elefantjagt, polo, golf og cricket. Byen kommer virkelig til live i april under det singalesiske og tamilske nytår. Festlighederne starter årligt den 1. april på ceremoniel vis. Hovedattraktionerne i april inkluderer motor- og hestevæddeløb. Motorløbene omfatter Mahagastotte- og Radella-bakkeopstigningerne, hvoraf den første har kørt siden 1934. Nuwara Eliya Road Race og 4x4 Lake Cross ved kanten af Lake Gregory tiltrækker mange entusiaster.
