Ratnapura-distriktet
Ratnapura er et distrikt i Sabaragamuwa-provinsen i Sri Lanka. Det er et af Sri Lankas 25 distrikter og udgør landets administrative inddeling på andet niveau. Distriktet administreres af et distriktssekretariat ledet af en distriktssekretær (tidligere kendt som Government Agent), der udpeges af Sri Lankas centralregering.
Distriktet dækker et areal på 3.275 km² og havde ifølge folketællingen i 2012 en befolkning på 1.082.277. Byen ligger i den sydvestlige del af Sri Lanka i den såkaldte våde zone. Området modtager nedbør hovedsageligt fra de sydvestlige monsunvinde fra maj til september. I årets øvrige måneder forekommer der også betydelig nedbør som følge af konvektive regnbyger. Den gennemsnitlige årlige nedbør er omkring 4.000 til 5.000 mm. Den gennemsnitlige temperatur varierer mellem 24 og 35 °C, og luftfugtigheden er høj. Byen ligger 21 m (69 fod) over havets overflade.
Ratnapura ligger ved Kalu Ganga (Den Sorte Flod) i det sydlige centrale Sri Lanka, cirka 101 km (63 miles) sydøst for landets hovedstad, Colombo. Ratnapura staves også som Rathnapura. Navnet „Ratnapura“ er et sanskritord, der betyder „ædelstensby“, afledt af ordene pura (by) og ratna (ædelsten). Mange af de fremtrædende ædelstenshandlere i Sri Lanka har base i denne by. Ud over ædelstensminedrift er byen kendt for produktion af ris og frugt. Store plantager med te og gummi omgiver byen. Teen, der dyrkes i denne region, kaldes lavlands-te. Der findes også en rute til Sri Pada fra Ratnapura. Udflugter omfatter Sinharaja-skovreservatet og Udawalawe Nationalpark. Det omkringliggende område er et populært mål for trekking og et godt sted til fuglekiggeri.
