Mullaitivu é a cidade principal do distrito de Mullaitivu, localizada na costa nordeste da Província do Norte, Sri Lanka. Originalmente um assentamento pesqueiro, a cidade cresceu no início do século XX como um porto para pequenas embarcações a vela que transportavam mercadorias entre Colombo e Jaffna. A cidade possui o escritório do Secretário do Distrito, muitas outras instituições governamentais e escolas localizadas na cidade e arredores.

Durante as Guerras Kandyanas, a casa do governo britânico em Mullaitivu foi atacada pelas forças de Pandara Vanniyan e Dissava de Nuwara Kalawiya, que cercaram a fortaleza. O capitão Drieberg e suas forças malasias escaparam da fortaleza em barcos e chegaram a Jaffna. Durante a Guerra Civil do Sri Lanka, Mullaitivu se tornou uma base isolada para as forças armadas do Sri Lanka. Em uma batalha feroz, o LTTE conseguiu tomar a base em 1996. Após isso, as forças armadas do Sri Lanka se retiraram de Mullaitivu, permitindo que o LTTE assumisse o controle da área. A cidade foi danificada pelo tsunami do Oceano Índico em 2004, com grande perda de vidas. O Exército do Sri Lanka assumiu o controle da cidade em 25 de janeiro de 2009, na Batalha de Mullaitivu, em sua ofensiva contra o LTTE. O Quartel-General das Forças de Segurança – Mullaitivu foi estabelecido em 5 de junho de 2009 na cidade.

Sobre o Distrito de Mullaitivu

O Distrito de Mullaitivu é um dos 25 distritos de Sri Lanka, a divisão administrativa de segundo nível do país. O distrito é administrado por um Secretariado Distrital, chefiado por um Secretário Distrital (anteriormente conhecido como Agente do Governo) nomeado pelo governo central de Sri Lanka. A capital do distrito é a cidade de Mullaitivu.

Partes do atual Distrito de Mullaitivu faziam parte do antigo Reino de Jaffna. O distrito depois passou para o controle português, holandês e britânico. Em 1815, os britânicos tomaram o controle de toda a ilha de Ceilão. Eles dividiram a ilha em três estruturas administrativas baseadas na etnia: os sinhaleses das planícies, os sinhaleses de Kandian e os tamiles. O distrito, que então fazia parte do Distrito de Vanni, estava sob a administração tamil. Em 1833, de acordo com as recomendações da Comissão Colebrooke-Cameron, as estruturas administrativas baseadas na etnia foram unificadas em uma única administração dividida em cinco províncias geográficas. O Distrito de Vanni, junto com o Distrito de Jaffna e o Distrito de Mannar, formou a nova Província do Norte.

About Jaffna District

Jaffna is the capital city of the Northern Province, Sri Lanka. 85% of the populations of the Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts are Hindus. The Hindus follow the Saivite tradition. The remainders are largely Roman Catholics or Protestants, some of whom are descendants of colonial settlers, known as Burghers. The Tamils are divided along caste lines, with the farmer-caste Vellalar forming the majority. Sea products, red onion, and tobacco are the main products in Jaffna.

Jaffna is home to beautiful Hindu temples. An Old Dutch Fort still stands well preserved within which is an old Church. Another example of Dutch architecture is the King's House. No visit to Jaffna is complete without tasting the exquisite Jaffna mango, reputed for its sweetness. About 3 km away is the majestic Nallur Kandaswamy Temple, home to the largest religious festival in Jaffna. The Kayts Harbour is an ancient ship docking site in the Jaffna region.

About Northern Province

The Northern Province is one of the 9 provinces of Sri Lanka. The provinces have existed since the 19th century but they didn't have any legal status until 1987 when the 13th Amendment to the 1978 Constitution of Sri Lanka established provincial councils. Between 1988 and 2006 the province was temporarily merged with the Eastern Province to form the North-East Province. The capital of the province is Jaffna.

Northern Province is located in the north of Sri Lanka and is just 22 miles (35 km) from India. The province is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay to the west, Palk Strait to the north, the Bay of Bengal to the east and the Eastern, North Central and North Western provinces to the south.The province has a number of lagoons, the largest being Jaffna Lagoon, Nanthi Kadal, Chundikkulam Lagoon, Vadamarachchi Lagoon, Uppu Aru Lagoon, Kokkilai lagoon, Nai Aru Lagoon and Chalai Lagoon.Most of the islands around Sri Lanka are to be found to the west of the Northern Province. The largest islands are: Kayts, Neduntivu, Karaitivu, Pungudutivu and Mandativu.

The Northern Province's population was 1,311,776 in 2007. The majority of the populations are Sri Lankan Tamils, with a minority Sri Lankan Moor and Sinhalese population. Sri Lankan Tamil is the major language spoken in the province by the vast majority of the population. The other language spoken is Sinhala by 1 percent of the population. English is widely spoken and understood in the cities.
