Melastoma malabathricum - A shrub up to 3 m tall; branches covered with brownish scales. Leaves 5-20 x 15-7 cm; petiole 3-15 mm long. Flowers few; hypanthium 5-9 mm wide; petals 20-30 mm long, pink to mauve and purple. Fruit a fleshy capsule inside the persistent hypanthium. Seeds numerous.
