Aegle marmelos, commonly known as Beli, is a revered tree in Sri Lanka valued for its nutritional, medicinal, and cultural significance. This medium to large tree can grow up to 13m tall, featuring slender branches and an open, irregular crown. The fruit has a hard shell enclosing a fragrant, yellow pulp that is naturally sweet and widely used in beverages and traditional preparations. Flowers and tender leaves are often used to prepare herbal teas, offering a refreshing and soothing drink.

Every part of the Beli tree is used in traditional Ayurvedic practices. The flowers and leaves are known for their cooling and calming properties, often applied in remedies for eye conditions and respiratory discomfort. The roots are a key ingredient in the well-known “Dasamula” herbal decoction, supporting overall balance in the body. Beli leaves are also used in poultices to help relieve conditions such as bronchitis and headaches.

The fruit of the Beli tree plays a major role in traditional wellness. Unripe or half-ripe fruits are valued for their digestive benefits and are commonly used to support conditions like diarrhea and dysentery, especially in children. Ripe fruits are aromatic, cooling, and mildly laxative, making them suitable for improving digestion and relieving constipation. Beli fruit is also popularly enjoyed as a refreshing sherbet, offering both taste and natural health benefits, making it an important part of Sri Lanka’s herbal heritage.
